ROCK HILL, S.C. - Charleston Southern picked up their 11th win in a row as the Buccaneers topped host No. 62 Winthrop on Monday afternoon at the Memorial Courts, 5-2.
It took a total team effort for the Buccaneers on the afternoon as CSU continued their winning streak that dates back to February 15th against South Carolina State as Charleston Southern improves to 12-3 overall on the season and 6-0 in Big South Conference play. Winthrop falls to 10-4, 4-1 in conference action with the loss.
The victory puts the Buccaneers on the fast track to the 2014 Big South Conference regular season title with matches against Longwood, Campbell and Coastal Carolina still remaining on the schedule.
Winthrop opened up the match in taking the doubles point on the afternoon as the Eagles took wins on courts 2 and 3 to go up 1-0 on the Buccaneers.
Caitlin Cridland and Ekin Gunaysu topped Alia Nour and Mi'Kola Cooper on court no. 2, 8-5, while Beth Williamson and Tijana Uzelac topped Marketa Placha and Nicolin Luecke on court no. 3, 8-4, to give the opening point of the match to Winthrop. Alexandra Walters and Yvonne Hubler prevented the Winthrop sweep in doubles action with an 8-4 win over Andressa Garcia and Alice Garcia on court no. 1.
Charleston Southern showed off their depth in singles action, taking five of the six singles matches in defeating the Eagles as Placha, Hubler, Walters, Luecke and Nour all picked up wins for the Buccaneers on the afternoon.
Placha topped Andressa Garcia on court no. 1, 7-6, 6-4, and Hubler added a 6-3, 6-4 win over Alice Garcia on court no. 2, 6-3, 6-4. Walters added a 6-2, 6-4 win over Cridland on court no. 3, and Nour added a 6-2, 6-2 win over Monica Aguado on court no. 6. Luecke completed the CSU victories on the day with a 6-0, 1-6, 6-1 win over Uzelac on court no. 4.
Gunaysu picked up the lone Winthrop singles win on the afternoon with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Cooper on court no. 5.
Charleston Southern continues play next weekend as the Buccaneers travel to Longwood on April 6. and Campbell on April 7th, before closing out the Big South regular season on April 9th against Coastal Carolina.
