Bucs sixth after opening round of 2014 Big South Championships

NINETY SIX, S.C. (www.BigSouthSports.com) –Charleston Southern shot a team 310 (+22) and is tied for sixth after 18 holes at the 2014 Big South Women's Golf Championship on Sunday at The Patriot Golf Club at Grand Harbor (par 72, 6,083 yards) in Ninety Six, S.C.

Campbell shattered the Big South Championship record for lowest team round with its 10-under 278 in the first round of the 2014 Big South Women's Golf Championship to take a 19-stroke lead over defending champion Coastal Carolina on Sunday at The Patriot Golf Club at Grand Harbor (par 72, 6,083 yards) in Ninety Six, S.C.  The Camels bettered the previous record by nine strokes, and are the first team in Championship history to have three players break 70 in the same round.

The Chanticleers are second at 297, four shots ahead of third-place High Point (301).  Gardner-Webb sits in fourth-place (306) with PC in fifth at 309.  Charleston Southern and Winthrop are tied for sixth at 310, while Radford is seventh with a team aggregate score of 311.  Longwood is ninth at 316.

While everyone is chasing Cambell, CSU is chasing the top third of the field. The Bucs are 22-over, a stroke back of Presbyterian and three behind Gardner-Webb.

Freshman Shelby Thompson holed a putt measured at just over 100 feet on No. 18 for an eagle to finish with a 74 (+2). Fellow-freshman Bella Johnson shot a 76 (+4) with a pair of birdies.

Seniors Vanessa Jay and Torey Johnson shot matching 80s (+8). Johnson birdied the 12th hole, while Jay closed her round with a birdie on the par-5 18th hole.

Senior Jordan Hollinshead shot an 84 (+12) with a birdie to start each of her nines.

Campbell freshman Louise Latorre tied the Big South Championship record for lowest individual round with her 4-under 68.  She recorded four birdies on the front nine and added three on the back to offset three bogeys on the day.  Her score matches the record first set by Coastal Carolina's Ann Maness in 2006 and equaled by Coastal's Brittany Henderson in 2012.

Big South Golfer of the Year Kaylin Yost and teammate Lisbeth Brooks each finished one shot behind Latorre as part of the Camels' record-breaking performance.  Yost opened with six birdies on her first nine holes to make the turn with a 30 on her card.  Brooks was 3-under on the front and was even par on the back for her 69.  Coastal Carolina's Lena Schaeffner was the fourth player under par on Sunday, as she posted a 71 to lead the Chanticleers.  High Point's Grier Bennett, Campbell's Tahnia Ravnjak and Gardner-Webb's Julia Henderson all finished at even-par 72.

Latorre led the field with seven birdies, followed by Yost (6) and Brooks (5).

Second round action will begin Monday, April 14 with a double tee beginning at 8:00am (No. 1) and 8:30am (No. 10), while the final round is scheduled to conclude on Tuesday.  The event is free and open to the public, and can be followed online at www.BigSouthSports.com via GolfStat's "Live Scoring" feature.
