Bucs finish 11th at Old Waverly

WEST POINT, Miss. – Charleston Southern shot a 2-over 290 in its final two rounds to finish 11th at the 2014 Old Waverly Intercollegiate, hosted by Mississippi State. The Bucs finished the final holes of their second round and played their final round on Tuesday at the Old Waverly Country Club.

CSU bounced back from a 297 (+9) in the opening round to take 11th in field which included three Southeastern Conference teams, along with Wichita State, Southern Miss, and Cincinnati. The Bucs finished ahead of No. 37 Memphis in the event and just three strokes out of the top eight.

Host Mississippi State won by one stroke over Cincinnati and three ahead of Ole Miss. Florida was fourth and South Alabama fifth to round out the top five.

Junior Will Pieper finished 22nd after closing out the second round with a 2-under 70 and following with a 73 (+1) in Tuesday's final round. He made four birdies on Tuesday, including one on his final hole to finish the event at 2-over par.

Freshman Austin James eagled his last hole of the tournament to finish with an even-par 72. James tied Pieper as the Buccaneers' top finisher in 22nd. After a pair of bogeys to open his round, he was 2-under over his final 16 holes to take some momentum into the Big South Championships.

Junior Jarrett Swan finished two strokes back of James and Pieper in 28th. He closed with a 73 (+1) and birdies two of his last three holes to climb up the leaderboard late.

Senior David Denlinger rallied from a slow start from his tournament to card his best round of the event with a 72 (E) on Tuesday. He played a 10-hole stretch 4-under par before a trio of late birdies hurt his score.

Senior Ross Thomson finished in a tie for 74th. He had a stretch with three birdies in four holes before two late bogeys left him with a 76 (+4).

Mississippi State's Barrett Edens and Austin Peay's Marco Iten tied for medalist honors at 207 (-9). Edens' 7-under 65 in the third round was the lowest in the tournament's history.

The Buccaneers now begin preparations for the Big South Championships on April 21-23 at The Patriot in Ninety-Six, S.C.
