CSU falls to Liberty in Big South opener on Wednesday

CHARLESTON, S.C. - Erica Gazzani's second goal of the season was not enough for Charleston Southern on Wednesday afternoon as the Buccaneers fell to visiting Liberty at Blackbaud Stadium in the Big South opener for both teams, 4-1.

Gazzani scored in the second minute of the game, the fastest goal scored for the Bucs this season, but Liberty was paced by a pair of Brittany Aanderud goals on their way to the conference win.

Charleston Southern fell to 4-5, 0-1 in Big South play with the loss, while Liberty improves to 5-3, 1-0 in conference play.

Liz-Amanda Brown recorded seven saves in goal for the Bucs as the freshman goalkeeper faced 21 shots during the contest. Holly Van Noord recorded the victory for the Flames playing 67:37 in goal while making a save, while Tori Collar closed out the win with three saves over the final 22 minutes.

Gazzani provided the early fireworks for the Bucs, scoring on CSU's first shot of the game at the 1:46 mark. Stephanie Hand headed the ball toward midfield where Anna Sells headed it into the box, leading Gazzani toward the net. The sophomore midfielder took the shot from 12 yards out putting the shot over Van Noord and into the net to put CSU ahead 1-0.

Rebeccah Smith evened the score four minutes later after taking the pass from Helena Periera, putting the shot past Brown to tie the match up at 1-1 with 5:36 to play.

Liberty added two more goals off of corner kicks in the first half, with Madison Kauzlarich scoring off the assist from Aanderud and Jaime Bouffard at the 8:36 mark to put the Flames ahead. Aanderud scored her first goal of the game at the 18:35 mark as her corner kick deflected off of Brown and into the side of the net to give the Flames the 3-1 lead.

Aanderud added a late second half goal at the 61:51 mark to tally the final score on the board.

CSU returns to the road this weekend as the Bucs travel to Cupp Stadium and Radford, Va., to take on Radford in Big South Conference play. Kickoff between the Bucs and the Highlanders is set for 2 p.m.
