CHARLESTON, S.C. - Charleston Southern topped Radford on a rain-soaked Thursday morning at the CSU Soccer Field as Anna Sells and Sidney Doherty both found the back of the net in pacing the Buccaneers past the Highlanders, 2-0.
Alyssa Dellacqua had her second straight strong performance in the net with 11 saves in goal for the Bucs as she became the third CSU goalkeeper to record a shutout in the 2015 season
The win was CSU's first Big South win of the 2015 season and their first win over Radford since the 1998 season as the Buccaneers snapped a 16-match skid against the Highlanders. CSU improves to 3-4-2 on the year, 1-2 in Big South play, while Radford falls to 5-6, 0-3 in conference action.
With field conditions still recovering from Wednesday afternoon's storm front, the Buccaneers found their footing early in the contest with nine of the first 10 shots.
Anna Sells took advantage of the conditions early in scoring her fifth goal of the season. The junior forward intercepted a Radford clearance attempt near the top of the goal box and dribble twice before firing past a diving Katie McCormick in the 15th minute for the first score of the contest.
The Highlanders threated late in the first half with Ana Revollo twice firing from close and Britney Kendall putting a foot on the ball inside the box, but Dellacqua kept Radford off the scoreboard.
Just before the break, Erica Gazzani took the final shot of the half with two seconds remaining. Her shot from 12 yards out was deflected left by McCormick to keep the margin at 1-0 at the break.
Both teams traded shots throughout the second half until the combination of Sells and Doherty led to the Bucs second goal of the season.
In the 71st minute, Sells headed the ball into the box where it was deflected by McCormick back into the field of play. Sells passed off the deflection to an open Doherty and the freshman forward scored her first goal of the season from four yards out to put CSU ahead 2-0.
The last 15 minutes were all Radford on the offensive end as the Highlanders sent seven shots toward the net. Dellacqua made a trio of saves, but Chelsea Frankeny kept the shutout intact in the 86th minute as the senior defender blocked Aysia Mitchell's shot on an open net to close out the game.
Strong second half performances off the bench by Addie Bokelman and McKenzie Davis helped the Bucs on the day, while Gina Cox was second on the team with three shots on goal for CSU in the win.
McCormick made 12 saves for the Highlanders in the contest as CSU out-shot Radford 22-20 overall.
Charleston Southern has a quick turnaround as the Buccaneers host Presbyterian at the CSU Soccer Field on Saturday afternoon. Kickoff between the Big South rivals is set for 1 p.m.
