CHARLESTON, S.C. - Sidney Doherty scored the game-winner in the 86th minute as Charleston Southern battled both the elements and Francis Marion on Saturday afternoon in recording the 2-1 win.
Anna Sells tied the match up in the 76th minute as the junior forward connected on her sixth goal of the season off the pass from Chelsea Frankeny. Sells added an assist on Doherty's game-winner in the 86th minute for her second assist of the year as CSU improved to 4-5-2 in the 2015 season.
"We found a way to get it done today," said CSU women's soccer head coach Eric Terrill. "Francis Marion is a team that has really improved since the beginning of the season and you can see it in their play today. We didn't play as well as we are capable of playing. The girls really found a way to persevere and really threw their bodies into it. They showed the ability to fight and overcome some obstacles. It wasn't very pretty, but if you have that kind of mindset, you can win games like we did today."
Liz Amanda Brown recorded three saves on the afternoon in posting the win inside the net for the Bucs. Taylor O'Berry had 15 saves in the loss for the Patriots.
The game started in a torrential downpour at the CSU Soccer Field, but the Bucs took advantage of FMU's difficulty in moving the ball as CSU outshot the Patriots 20-7 in the first half.
Frankeny, in particular, was effective for the CSU offense throughout the game with a career-high 13 shots, four in goal in the contest. Doherty (nine shots) and Sells (seven shots) added to the CSU offensive output as the Bucs outshot the Patriots 36-16 for the game.
"Chelsea [Frankeny] is a senior and she wants to win," commented Terrill. "She is more comfortable with her role in the back, but we need her sometimes to play forward, need her aggressiveness, and she steps up and does it. Chelsea gives us another wrinkle and helps us create more shot opportunities."
The Buccaneers fired early and often throughout the first half with six different players connecting on shots, including Jordan Haughton-James firing from 25 yards out in the 12th minute. However, O'Berry recorded 13 saves over the first period to send the match into the half tied 0-0.
Tori Whigham broke the seal on the scoreboard in the 63rd minute as the Francis Marion forward took the pass up the middle from Kelly Anthony. She took a shot from eight yards out that deflected off of Brown and bounced into the net to put the Patriots ahead 1-0.
Sells answered for the Bucs in the 76th minute off the assist from Frankeny to even the score at 1-1. Frankeny crossed the ball into the box from the left, settling it in front of the net. Sells slid in and deflected the pass into the net from four yards out, past O'Berry to tie the match at 1-1.
The Bucs continued to press late in the game with Doherty scoring her second goal of the season off of the pass ahead from Sells. The freshman forward collected the ball and slipped a shot past O'Berry off the one-on-one opportunity from 12 yards out at the 85:33 mark to give CSU the 2-1 lead.
The Patriots had two late chances as Arianna Pierner and Breanna Henderson both fired toward the net, but both shots sailed high as CSU closed out the win.
The Buccaneers remain at home on Wednesday afternoon as CSU hosts Winthrop in Big South Conference play. Kickoff between the Bucs and the Eagles on the Big South Network is set for 3 p.m.
