CHARLESTON, S.C. - Charleston Southern scored three goals in the first 25 minutes to jump out ahead of visiting Presbyterian on Thursday afternoon as the Buccaneers topped the Blue Hose in Big South Conference play at the CSU Soccer Field, 4-1.
Anna Sells recorded her third multi-goal game of the season as the junior forward scored in the sixth and the 69th minutes to pace the CSU offense as the Buccaneers picked up their fourth straight home win in the month of October.
"PC is a tough opponent and they've have some success this year," said CSU head coach Eric Terrill. "They're a competitive team who has topped Radford and Liberty already this season, but they were also playing their second day in a row and they had to travel here. That's tough, but they are a good, competitive team."
Erica Gazzani and Sidney Doherty both scored their third goals of the season with the duo scoring in the 19th and the 25th minutes as CSU recorded their second win in as many days at the CSU Soccer Field.
Alyssa Dellacqua recorded her second straight win and third of the season in the net for the Bucs, recording five saves against Presbyterian's 14 shots.
CSU will look to make it three in a row this week on Saturday as the Buccaneers host Longwood at the CSU Soccer Field at 1 p.m.
"Three games in four days is a challenge," Terrill commented. "I'm sure Longwood is going to come in here on Saturday ready to go and we need to be ready as well. We need to get going early like we did today. We can't do anything about the schedule, all we can do is be prepared for each game and go out and play to the best of our abilities."
The Bucs offense struck early and often in the first half with Sells putting the first goal on the board at the 5:49 mark. The junior forward took the pass from Emily Moore inside the box and finished from six yards out past PC's Sydney Fontenot to put the Bucs ahead 1-0.
CSU added to their lead in the 19th minute as Erica Gazzani showed deft footwork in stealing the ball from a PC defender down the left sideline. The junior midfielder dribbled the ball through the defense and finished the 1-on-1 opportunity from the top of the box at the 18:46 mark to double the Bucs' lead.
Doherty added her third goal of the season in the 25th minute off the pass from Sells. Sells' pass cleared the backline to the feet of Doherty who finished at the 24:35 mark to put the Bucs ahead 3-0.
Presbyterian nearly put a score on the board in the 43rd minute as the Blue Hose fired three shots into a crowded box. Dellacqua made two saves during the span, corralling Hannah Gaither's attempt at the 42:55 mark to end the PC attack and send the teams into the break with CSU leading 3-0.
Sells scored her second goal of the contest in the 69th minute off the pass from Kate Brede to put the Bucs up 4-0. Brede lofted the ball to Sells on the left wing and the junior forward finished from 8 yards out for the goal.
PC took one back at the 74:12 mark as Erin Moriarty redirected a ball that bounced around in the box from 18 yards out, past Dellacqua to put the Blue Hose on the board.
Addie Bokelman added two late shots for the Bucs, missing wide left and wide right late as CSU closed out the contest with the 4-1 win.
