Stanford runs past Charleston Southern, 93-59

Box Score

STANFORD, Calif. – Stanford engineered a 24-7 run to take a 25-point lead into halftime, and built on that lead after intermission to defeat Charleston Southern, 93-59, on Sunday at Maples Pavilion. The game was part of the 2015 NIT Season Tip-Off.

CSU (0-2) was held to less than 35 percent shooting and never led in its fifth-ever game against a PAC-12 opponent. Stanford (2-0) made eight of its first ten shots to set a blistering pace en route to shooting 58 percent. The Cardinal also out-rebounded the Bucs, 45-23, and posted a 20-3 edge in points off turnovers.

Stanford guard Dorian Pickens tallied 20 points to lead four Cardinal in double figures scoring. CSU junior Patrick Wallace buried four three-pointers and scored 13 points to pace the Bucs.

Javis Howard scored CSU's first five points, connecting on a jumper and a three-pointer. Stanford spread out its scoring load to get out to an early advantage, but CSU was still within eight following Raemond Robinsons' three with 11:28 left in the half. The Cardinal's 2-3 zone held the Bucs to just two field goals for the remainder of the stanza, though, to assume full control.

Reid Travis' free throw gave Stanford its first 20-point lead, and along with the 6-9 Michael Humphrey, the 6-8, 245-pounder gave CSU fits for most of the night. Humphrey finished with a double-double of 13 points and 12 rebounds. Stanford's size and length consistently made CSU work hard to find open shots.

The Cardinal led 46-21 at halftime and hit their first five shots of the second stanza to push the margin to 59-26 at the 16:27 mark. Pickens found Travis for a two-handed dunk in transition to punctuate the surge.

Wallace drilled one of his four triples to bring the gap back inside of 30 at 61-33, but Josh Shurma made two free throws on Stanford's ensuing possession and the Cardinal cruised to victory.

CSU returns to the Buc Dome for its home opener against Johnson & Wales (N.C.) on Wednesday. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m., and the program will unfurl its 2014-15 Big South regular season championship banner prior to the start.
