FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Arkansas made six first half three-pointers to build a large early lead and fight off Charleston Southern, 93-75, on Friday night at Bud Walton Arena.
The Buccaneers got a career high 20 points from freshman Armel Potter, playing in only his fourth college game, but couldn't cool off the Razorbacks and, specifically, guard Dusty Hannahs.
Hannahs was 5-for-5 from three-point range and finished with a game-high 21 points to lead five Arkansas players in double figures. He connected on his three first half attempts from long range to spark the Hogs to an early 26-11 lead.
The Bucs could not put together a run to really threaten Arkansas after the game's opening ten minutes, but showed some signs of progress despite facing one of the toughest schedules in the country through four games. CSU has traveled almost 8,000 miles already in facing off against nationally ranked Wichita State, along with Stanford and Arkansas
"Arkansas made a lot of shots and really played as hard as I've seen them play all year," said CSU head coach Barclay Radebaugh. "That said, I thought our team really improved and that last 20 minutes was the best 20 we've played this season."
"We've got a lot of new guys and are trying to find our rhythm but we competed and played well offensively there in the second half," Radebaugh continued. "Armel was terrific, and we got some really good effort off our bench. We wanted to improve, and we were certainly able to do that."
Potter finished 7-of-18 from the floor against a much longer Arkansas team, and also handed out a career-high seven assists.
Newcomers combined for 50 of the Bucs' points, led by Potter's 20 and 12 each from Raemond Robinson and Ugo Mmonu. Mmonu scored all 11 of his points after intermission, connecting on a pair of three-pointers while also converting a three-point play. Robinson was 3-of-9 from three point range, and hustled to the floor for a first half loose ball to lead to two of Potter's 20 points. Wes Johnson added a career-high 11 points for CSU.
Moses Kingsley added 15 points to go with Hannahs' sharpshooting for the Hogs. Jimmy Whitt and Manuale Watkins added 14 apiece, while Anthlon Bell chipped in 12. Jabril Durham finished with seven points and a game-high 11 assists for the Razorbacks.
CSU returns home on Tuesday to square off against ETSU. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m., and the contest will be the Bucs' third as part of the 2015 NIT Season Tip-Off.
