CHARLESTON, S.C. - Erica Gazzani connected on her second goal of the season in the 33rd minute as Charleston Southern topped The Citadel in the Nike Challenge 2 opener for both squads on Friday afternoon, 1-0.
Liz Amanda Brown recorded her first shutout of the season with seven saves between the pipes as the Buccaneers (2-1-1) withstood late challenges by the Bulldogs (0-7) in both halves in snapping a three match skid against The Citadel.
"The Citadel is a really well-coached team," said CSU head coach Eric Terrill. "We knew they were a team to be reckoned with. They struggled early on this season, but they've also played some really tough competition. You combine a team that is looking for their first win and add in a cross town rivalry matchup, and we know that team is going to play really hard."
Sidney Doherty and Gazzani had four shots apiece for the Bucs, while Lydia Frierson and Chelsea Frankeny led the Bucs with two shots on goal apiece as CSU picked up their second win of the season at the CSU Soccer Field.
"We are really coming along," said Terrill. "While we maybe didn't convert on a bunch of opportunities tonight, we created a bunch of scoring chances. That means something. Seeing several different girls take some good looks tonight is a good sign."
Brown faced 16 Citadel shots in the contest making seven saves and a number of diving stops on Bulldogs' challenges in the box in CSU's second shutout of the 2015 season.
Sam Millspaugh and Abby Koger combined to record nine saves for the Bulldogs in the loss.
With the score tied midway through the first half, Frierson found Gazzani alone at the top of the box in the 33rd minute. The junior midfielder finished the shot, driving the ball into the upper left corner from 18 yards out at the 32:44 mark to give CSU the 1-0 lead.
The Citadel nearly tied the match at the 44:54 mark in the half as Emilie Valenciano uncorked a shot from 25 yards out. The ball connected with the crossbar just over a leaping Brown and cleared by the CSU defense as the half ended.
The Bucs and Bulldogs challenged each other throughout the half, with Citadel launching their final counterattack late in the half. Andrea Davila's shot in the final minute was blocked by the Bucs' defense and CSU was able to run out the clock on their way to closing out the win.
Charleston Southern remains at home as the Buccaneers host Morehead State on Sunday afternoon at the CSU Soccer Field. Kickoff between the Bucs and the Eagles is set for 1 p.m.
