Coastal (11-8, 5-4 Big South) guards Shivaughn Wiggins (23 points) and Jaylen Shaw (22 points) combined for 45 points and sunk five of the Chanticleers' eight first half three-pointers. CSU (8-12, 4-5 Big South) closed within 12 points with 13:15 remaining courtesy of a 10-0 spurt, but could never get on track as its three-game winning streak came to an end.
"I thought Coastal played really well and had a great opening ten minutes, in particular," said CSU head coach Barclay Radebaugh. "They really set the tone for it being a physical game and they took it to us."
Coastal out-rebounded CSU, 43-38, and held the Bucs to 38.5 percent shooting, showcasing why it is the Big South's leader in rebounding margin and field goal percentage defense. The Chanticleers out-rebounded the Bucs by ten in the opening half and posted a 12-0 advantage in second chance points. CSU was also limited to 29 percent shooting in the opening stanza as Coastal used a 7-0 run to take a 44-23 halftime lead.
Javis Howard paced the Bucs with 15 points, while Armel Potter added 12 of his 14 in the second half. Aaron Wheeler pulled down a team-high eight rebounds but scored only six points on 2-of-12 shooting to snap a stretch of seven straight games in double figures.
Back-to-back threes from Patrick Wallace made the score 18-11 and appeared to snap the Bucs out of an early funk. Coastal's Ron Trapps quickly buried two treys of his own, though, to allow the Chanticleers to seize control with an 8-0 spurt.
Shaw, who led all scorers with 15 points in the first half, tacked on two more triples to push Coastal's lead to 36-19 with 5:26 left. He sunk another trey late in the half to move the edge to 19, before Marcus Freeman beat the buzzer with a put back to give Coastal a 44-23 cushion.
CSU generated several turnovers during its brief second half push. Potter tallied six of the Bucs' ten points during the run, and had a steal and fed Demetrius Pollard for a layup to cap the surge.
Coastal quickly answered with nine consecutive points to quell CSU's comeback hopes. Freeman scored four points in a row, Wiggins went end-to-end for a three-point play and Colton Ray-St Cyr made a jumper to put the Chanticleers in front, 63-42. Wiggins made two free throws to give Coastal its largest lead, 73-48 at the 5:10 mark.
CSU heads back on the road Wednesday at Winthrop. Tipoff at Winthrop Coliseum in Rock Hill, S.C. is slated for 7 p.m.
