Box Score HIGH POINT, N.C. - Charleston Southern's bench scored 40 points on Monday night to pace the Buccaneers' fourth quarter comeback as CSU topped host High Point in the Millis Center, 64-62.
With the Bucs (8-6, 3-2) facing a double-digit deficit with 8:12 remaining following an Aariel Allen free throw, CSU rallied back behind six straight points from Ke'Asia Jackson and Shauntavia Dobson to make it a four point game at 54-50. The Panthers (3-10, 2-2) kept a one-possession lead until late in the ball game when Elyse Kiploks and Breanna Saunders combined for eight straight CSU points with Saunders putting in the final two from the free throw line to tie the game up at 58-58 with 1:55 remaining
Shauntavia Dobson gave CSU the lead for good on their next possession as the sophomore guard connected on her second three-pointer of the game, giving the Bucs the 61-60 advantage with 1:17 to play. Kiploks connected on a baseline jumper late in the shot clock to stretch the CSU lead to three points.
On the following High Point possession, Kiploks blocked the Kaylah Keys' three-point attempt and directed the shot to Nayla Long. Long converted one of two attempts from the free throw line to clinch the Bucs' second straight Big South Conference road win.
Long led the Bucs with 15 points in the game, 12 coming in the first quarter as the Bucs raced out to the 21-10 lead over the Panthers. The junior guard finished the game 6-of-9 from the floor including 2-of-3 from the three-point line.
Dobson added 14 points off the bench and a career-high six assists, while Kiploks finished with 10 points, five rebounds and two blocked shots as CSU outscored the Panthers 40-25 off the bench in the win.
Keys led High Point with 24 points and six steals as the Panthers shot 45.7% from the floor as a team in the loss. Shea Morgan added nine points, while Kyrie' Chandler had seven points and two rebounds.
Alyssa Mann and Long combined for 17 of CSU's 21 points in the first quarter as Mann started off the frame hot with a three-pointer and a jumper before leaving the game due to injury. Long rattled off nine straight points for the Bucs to give CSU the 14-7 lead with 2:46 left in the quarter. She added a late three-pointer as the Bucs held the double-digit lead after the first.
High Point battled their way back into the game from the free throw line in the second quarter as the Panthers combined to go 13-of-15 from the stripe with Keys connecting on six of seven attempts to put the halftime score at 31-29 in favor of the Bucs.
The Panthers took the 40-38 lead midway through the third quarter on the Maja Michalska three-pointer and went up by as many as six points in the frame following layups from Kennedy Currie and Keys with 3:13 remaining. Jackson sparked the Bucs late in the frame with a free throw and added a late layup to send the teams into the fourth with CSU trailing 48-44.
Charleston Southern is back in action on Saturday afternoon in the Buc Dome as CSU welcomes UNC Asheville for a Big South Conference matchup. Tipoff between the Bucs and the Bulldogs on the Big South Network is set for 2 p.m.
