Buccaneers unable to overcome Coastal Carolina second half run

Box Score

CONWAY, S.C. - A third quarter surge led host Coastal Carolina over visiting Charleston Southern on Tuesday night in Big South Conference play as the Buccaneers fell to the Chanticleers, 61-40.

The Bucs (11-14, 6-10) were outscored 26-9 overall in the third quarter as Coastal Carolina (9-15, 4-11) turned a halftime deficit into a double-digit lead throughout the remainder of the contest. CSU was sparked in the fourth quarter by six points off the bench by freshman guard Georgia Elliott-King, but it was not enough for CSU to fight their way back into the contest in falling to the Chants for the second time in the 2015-16 season.

Monique Maximilien narrowly missed out on her fifth double-double of the season as the senior center finished the contest with nine points and nine rebounds. Elyse Kiploks added six points and seven rebounds, while Elliott-King finished the game with a season-high six points.

The Buccaneers are back in action at home on Saturday afternoon as CSU hosts Gardner-Webb in the Buc Dome as a part of a doubleheader with the CSU men's basketball team. The women tipoff at 2 p.m. on the Big South Network, while the men's team hosts Campbell at 5:30 p.m. for Senior Day.

Neither side could control the ball in the first half as the teams combined for 36 turnovers over the first 20 minutes with the Chanticleers taking the 16-12 lead into the half. Nayla Long provided excitement for the Bucs just before the break as the junior guard connected on a half-court shot at the buzzer to narrow the margin down to four.

The Chanticleers took control of the game in the third quarter as Coastal Carolina was paced by Nicole Isaac's 11 points on 4-of-4 shooting from the floor in building a 21-point advantage. Kiploks led the Bucs with six points in the quarter, including three offensive rebounds.

The Bucs attempted to battle back in the fourth quarter behind three-pointers from Alyssa Mann and Elliott-King, but CSU was unable to keep pace with the Chants in falling, 61-40.

Ced Gibson led Coastal Carolina with 26 points in the contest, while Isaacs was also in double-digits with 16 points, including four three-pointers.
