Box Score CHARLESTON, S.C. – Charleston Southern concludes its regular season on Thursday at Coastal Carolina. Tipoff at the HTC Center is scheduled for 7 p.m., as the Bucs and Chanticleers meet for the final time as Big South Conference mates.
Game 29 Notes: Charleston Southern @ Coastal Carolina
CSU (9-19, 5-12 Big South) is looking to go into the Big South Tournament on a high note. Coastal Carolina (16-10, 10-6 Big South) needs one win in its last two games to secure a first-round bye in the Big South Tournament.
Both teams entered the first matchup at the Buc Dome at 4-4 in Big South play, but Coastal set the tone early, built a 21-point halftime lead and led by as much as 25 points in the second half to secure a 78-63 win. That was the third win in a seven-game winning streak that vaulted the Chanticleers into contention for the regular season conference title.
Coastal leads the league in rebounding margin, scoring defense and field goal percentage defense, and put all of that on display against CSU. The Chanticleers held the Bucs to 38.5 percent shooting overall, and just 29 percent in the first half. CSU was also out-rebounded by ten in the first half as Coastal registered a 12-0 edge in second chance points to take control.
Big Week for Wheeler
Aaron Wheeler averaged 24 points and nine rebounds per game last week, while shooting 53 percent from the field. Wheeler went for a career-high 31 points on 11-of-16 shooting in the Bucs' loss to Gardner-Webb, a game televised nationally on ESPNU. He hit two threes late in the first half to keep CSU close, and had steals that led to dunks and layups late in the second as the Bucs rallied from a 13-point deficit. Wheeler added 17 points and nine rebounds in the Senior Day game against Campbell.
All Over the Offensive Glass
CSU grabbed 24 offensive rebounds, including 15 in the second half, in Saturday's loss to Campbell. The 24 offensive boards are a season high against Division I opponents. Reuben King (6), Javis Howard (5) and Aaron Wheeler (4) combined for 15 of those rebounds.
No Freshman Wall for Potter
Armel Potter had a quiet game Saturday, but had been sensational since being held scoreless in CSU's loss to Winthrop. Potter was averaging 19.8 PPG, 6.0 RPG and 3.2 APG over his last six outings. He notched career high scoring totals in back-to-back games, tallying 21 while playing almost all 50 minutes in the 2 OT loss to Longwood before pouring in 27 in the win over Presbyterian.
Potter among Big South's best
Armel Potter is squarely in the conversation for Big South Freshman of the Year honors. He leads all league rookies in assists and assist-to-turnover ratio, and ranks second in scoring behind Campbell's Chris Clemons. Potter has recorded 11 efforts of 18 points ormore this season. The last Buc to win Freshman of the Year honors was Jeremy Sexton in 2009-10.
King finishing career on high note
CSU senior captain Reuben King notched his second double-double in as many weeks on Saturday against Campbell, tallying 14 points and ten rebounds. He scored eight straight points during a 1:46 stretch inside the 3-minute mark as the Bucs nearly rallied from a ten-point deficit. He had his first double-double with 13 points and ten rebounds in the win over Presbyterian. He scored 12 points against High Point, marking the first time in his career he's reached double figures in back-to-back games.
