KENNESAW, Ga. - Charleston Southern took the doubles point and victories on five of the six singles courts in topping host Kennesaw State on Friday afternoon at the Siegel Student Recreation & Activities Center.
The Bucs (2-0) picked up their second win of the season with the victory over the Owls with Sophie Cloessner and Briana Thompson both recording third set tiebreaker wins in the match.
CSU returns to the Buccaneer Tennis Complex on Tuesday afternoon as the Bucs open Big South Conference play at home against Radford. Doubles play is set for 2 p.m. between the Bucs and the Highlanders.
Nicolin Luecke and Valeria Koussenkova topped KSU's Christina Martin and Laura Hopton on court no. 1, 6-3, while Gabriela Srodowski and Cloessner defeated Alexandra Mercado and Gabriela Bueno on court no. 3 to give the Bucs the 1-0 lead after doubles action. The match between KSU's Isabela Castro/Ashleigh De Wet and CSU's Thompson/Kimberley Koerner did not finish.
In singles play, the Bucs picked up wins on courts 1, 2, 3, 5 and 6, in recording the win over KSU.
Nicolin Luecke topped Martin on court no. 1 for her first singles win of the season, winning in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2. Cloessner, in her first action of the season, topped Hopton on court no. 2 after dropping the first set, 6-7, 6-1, 14-12. Thompson made it three wins for the Bucs with a 6-4, 2-6, 6-1 win over Castro on court no. 3.
Koerner continued her early season success with the Bucs with a 7-5, 6-3 win over Bueno on court no. 5, while Koussenkova topped De Wet on court no. 6, 6-1, 6-3 for the final CSU win of the day.
Mercado picked up the lone KSU point on the afternoon with a hard-fought 6-4, 2-6, 10-6 win over CSU's Gabriela Srodowski on court no. 4.
