Bucs shut out Jacksonville in 2016 home opener; Sells scores twice in Bucs' win

Box Score

CHARLESTON, S.C. - Anna Sells found the back of the net twice as Charleston Southern shut out Jacksonville in the Buccaneers' 2016 home opener on Sunday afternoon, 2-0.

Sells' seventh career multi-goal effort paced a CSU (1-1) offensive effort that took control of the game early in the first half against the Dolphins (1-1). Liz Amanda Brown recorded her first shutout of the season inside the net for the Bucs.

"At the beginning of the season, you're really trying to get that first win under your belt," said CSU head coach Eric Terrill. "We traveled to Elon on Friday and Elon deserved to win the game. We had some concerns coming into today and the fact we were able to pull out a win today against a good Jacksonville team makes me happy. It's always good to play on your home field and get a win."

Sells' first two goals of the 2016 season moved the senior forward into the Top 10 all-time in the CSU career record books. Sells finished the match with 25 career goals, placing her in a four-way tie for eighth overall with Jennifer Strukel (1998-01), Alisha Rogers (1996-00), and Sarah Catenacci (2006-09).

"Anna (Sells) is a consummate goal scorer," Terrill said. "She's the kind of player you can count on, no matter what the situation. I don't think she's close to her top form at this time of the season, but the fact that she could put a couple of goals away here, like she did in the preseason against S.C. State and Coastal Carolina, is really a testament to the type of goal scorer that she is."

Sells' goals were assisted by Lydia Frierson and Erica Gazzani in the contest, and the senior forward gave the credit to her team for breaking into the CSU Top 10.

"I wouldn't be able to do it without my team," Sells said. "We started off a little slow today but once we got the momentum, we put everything together. The team pretty much puts it all together and I just end up putting it in the back of the net. I wouldn't be able to do it without them, and reaching this mark is just really exciting."

Brown stopped all five JU shots on goal in recording her first shutout of the 2016 season. The junior goalkeeper faced 20 shots with two going off the crossbar, but the CSU defense held the Dolphins from shooting inside the 18-foot box in the win.

"Liz has worked hard all summer to take away some of the weaknesses in her game," Terrill said. "I think her distribution today was much better. If you can keep a team shooting from outside the 18, it isn't going in against her; Liz is a really good shot stopper."

Sells challenged the JU defense early as the Buccaneers recorded three of the first four shots of the game. Sells' first attempt came 30 seconds into the contest, but was stopped by JU keeper Sara Wicks.

The Bucs broke through the Jacksonville defense in the 30th minute as Gazzani found Sells with a thru ball up the middle. Sells' converted the attempt to the lower left corner of the net past Wicks at the 29:31 mark to give CSU the 1-0 lead.

CSU doubled their lead in the 65th minute as Sells found the back of the net for the second time off the pass from Frierson. Frierson's thru ball led to a one-on-one opportunity for the senior forward, and Sells' shot deflected off the left goal post and into the back of the net from 14 yards out to give CSU the 2-0 lead.

Joelle D'Entremont led the Jacksonville attack with four shots (two on goal) in the loss. Wicks recorded three saves in the net for the Dolphins.

The Buccaneers continue the 2016 season at home next weekend as CSU hosts North Florida on Sunday afternoon. Kickoff at the CSU Soccer Field is set for 1 p.m. on the Big South Network.
