GREENVILLE, N.C. – Charleston Southern senior Shelby Thompson earned a spot on the all-tournament team to lead the Bucs to a seventh-place finish on Tuesday at the Lady Pirate Intercollegiate. Thompson fired a 1-under par 71 at Greenville Country Club to place fourth individually in a field of 96 players.
Host East Carolina captured its second straight title, compiling a three-round total of 16-over par to best second-place Elon by 28 shots. CSU was in contention for a spot near the top of the 18-team field thanks to a stellar second round on Monday. The Bucs recorded a final round score of 17-over 305 to finish three shots ahead of Southern Miss and six in front of Marshall. Coach Matt-Cram Smith's club also bested Big South Conference rivals High Point, Winthrop and Presbyterian.
Thompson followed a runner-up showing at the CSU Invitational with another terrific outing at a difficult course playing long due to rain last week. She showed resolve in her final round after bogeying three of her first four holes. Thompson played her last six holes of the day at 3-under par to notch her fifth round of par or better in just two tournaments.
Emelie Flink turned in a solid 3-over par 75 and placed as CSU's second highest finisher, in a tie for 31st. Bella Johnson rebounded from a tough back nine – her first nine of the day – to go 1-under on the front side. She eagled the par-4 5th hole to highlight a strong stretch run and finished tied for 37th.
Milleina Ohara sprinkled four birdies into a final round 76. Hayley McNeill struggled on the back nine but played better on the front, recording a par of birdies. Hannah Barger rounded out the Bucs' competitors with an 83.
CSU is back on the links this Oct. 2-4 at the Cougar Classic, hosted by College of Charleston at Yeamans Hall Club in nearby Hanahan.
