CHARLESTON, S.C. – Following a strong third quarter from Jacksonville, the Charleston Southern women's basketball team staged a 27-point fourth period but fell just short in their comeback efforts 68-58, ending the Buccaneer Classic.
CSU hung tight with the Dolphins through the opening half despite shooting just .267 from the floor, but a 24-10 third period in favor of the visiting Dolphins (3-3) was too much for the Bucs to overcome down the stretch.
The senior trio of Rachel Burns, Ke'Asia Jackson and Weknyne Dumorne led the Buccaneer (1-4) offense Sunday to the tune of 39 combined points, but a 17-point, 13-rebound double-double from Jacksonville's Khadijah Brown proved too much.
Burns scored 13 of her team-high 17 in the second half and nine in the fourth while also leading the Bucs with eight rebounds – all eight coming on the offensive end.
Both offenses struggled to crack the lockdown defense in the first half with a 24-21 score in favor of the road Dolphins through 20 minutes. Jacksonville found the bottom of the net beginning in the third shooting .588 before CSU answered with a .500 fourth.
How It Happened
- Both teams struggled offensively in the opening 20 minutes as Jacksonville score 12 in each of the first two frames while CSU tallied 10 and 11.
- The offenses opened up in the closing 20 as the Dolphins posted 24 and 20 in the final quarters while CSU countered with a game-high 27 fourth period. Those 27 were a season-high for CSU, tying the mark set in a win over Converse.
- CSU's three-point defense was on-point holding the Dolphins to just .111 from downtown, but a 34-16 advantage in the paint led Jacksonville to the win.
Inside the Numbers
- Both the Bucs and Dolphins had three players in double figures, but a 13-rebound and 11-board effort from Trudy Walker and Khadijah Brown paced a Jacksonville squad that outrebounded CSU by 17.
- Senior guard Rachel Burns had a near double-double as she led the Bucs with eight rebounds, all coming on the offensive end.
- Senior guard Ke'Asia Jackson has reached the 10-point mark in three of her four contests this season and leads the squad at 13.8 per game.
- Senior forward Weknyne Dumorne had a game-high four blocks in the loss as she's recorded four-or-more in three of the Bucs' five contests.
- The 21 offensive rebounds Sunday were the most a CSU opponent has this season, surpassing the 19 Saturday from Tennessee Tech and Davidson's effort earlier this season.
