CHARLESTON, S.C. - Charleston Southern was unable to build off late momentum in the second half as the Buccaneers fell to host The Citadel on Saturday night, 22-13.
Jack Chambers sparked the offense in the second half with 186 yards of total offense, including a late 27-yard touchdown pass to
Garris Schwarting to cut the Bulldogs lead to 20-13 late.
However, The Citadel (2-2) stopped the Bucs (0-4) twice in the red zone in the fourth quarter and picked up a late safety to provide the final margin in the game.
Chambers finished 4-of-8 for 92 yards passing and a touchdown. The redshirt sophomore added 94 rushing yards (71 on his first two carries) to pace the Bucs' offense in the game.
Ross Malmgren was 10-of-26 for 112 yards in his first collegiate start, while
Kameron Brown added six catches for 118 yards in the loss.
Remus Bulmer scored a pair of short touchdown runs, while Brian Murdaugh connected on a 54-yard pass and score to Raleigh Webb to highlight the Bulldogs' offensive efforts.
J.D. Sosebee posted 13 tackles to lead the Buccaneers defensively, while
Anton Williams added 12 stops and 2.0 tackles for loss.
Willie Eubanks III led the Bulldogs with nine tackles, a sack, two tackles for loss, and an interception.

Facing 4th-and-6 from the Bulldogs' 37-yard line with the Bulldogs holding the 20-13 lead, Citadel punter Matt Campbell connected on a 62-yard punt that was downed at the CSU 1. On the following play, the snap slipped through Chambers' hands and went out the back of the end zone for a safety and swung possession back to the Bulldogs.
The Buccaneers had their chances late in the contest, including a drive inside the Bulldogs' five-yard line, but CSU was unable to get back within one possession in the loss.

How They Scored
- The Citadel cracked the scoreboard late in the first half as Remus Bulmer took the handoff on the end-around to cap a nine-play, 50-yard drive with a five-yard touchdown run to put the Bulldogs ahead 7-0 with 2:13 left in the first half.
- Ross Malmgren connected on a 35-yard pass to Kameron Brown down the left sideline late in the first half and Alex Usry knocked in a 35-yard field goal as time expired to pull the Bucs within 7-3 at the halftime break.
- The Bucs took advantage of a muffed punt return on the opening possession of the second half as JaRon Godbolt caught the ricochet to put CSU in scoring position early in the third quarter. Usry followed up with a 48-yard field goal four plays later to cut The Citadel lead down to 7-6 with 13:20 left in the third quarter.
- Following a stalled Bucs drive in Citadel territory, the Bulldogs went 59 yards on three plays as Raleigh Webb caught the pass from Brian Murdaugh and went 54 yards to the end zone to go ahead 14-6 with 6:03 to play in the third quarter.
- Three CSU penalties inside the red zone led to a Remus Bulmer one-yard touchdown run to the left pylon to put the Bulldogs ahead 20-6 with 2:18 to play in the third quarter.
- Jack Chambers and Garris Schwarting cut into the Bulldogs lead with 10:41 remaining in the fourth quarter as the redshirt sophomore quarterback found the senior wideout by himself from 27 yards out to cut the lead down to 20-13.
- The Citadel added a late safety with 8:44 remaining to cap the scoring.
