CHARLESTON, S.C. – Peyton Thompson led all players with 18 kills Friday evening, but Hampton defeated visiting Charleston Southern in three sets (25-18, 25-23, 25-16) inside Holland Hall.

Kaileigh Ammons and Indigo Young tallied five kills apiece, while Paige Reagor had four kills in her return to the Buccaneer lineup. Emma Minnick had a match-high 26 assists, while Ashleigh Holweger led all players with 21 digs.

CSU opened up the match by taking five of the first six points, but a seven-point Hampton run gave the Pirates full control of the opening set. A four-point Buccaneer run, led by three Thompson kills, got CSU within five points but Hampton took the opening set, 25-18.

Hampton got off to a strong start to begin the second set, but the Bucs used a pair of scoring runs to claw their way back. CSU went on a 5-0 run, highlighted by two kills each from Thompson and Ella Lochbiler, to cut the Pirate lead to one midway through the set. The Bucs then used a 7-2 run to tie the set at 21-all, taking advantage of four Hampton errors during that span. Charleston Southern's momentum ran out, though, as Hampton closed the set by taking three of the last four points to open up a 2-0 lead in the match.

The Bucs and Pirates were neck-and-neck in the third set until a lengthy 10-1 Pirate run turned a tied set into a nine-point Hampton lead, which CSU never recovered from. Hampton was able to close out the set, 25-16, and complete the three-set win.
