STEPHENVILLE, TX. – Charleston Southern men's basketball found the final five points of the contest Sunday night to find its first victory away from home on the season. The Bucs used that late 5-0 run to top Tarleton State 59-57 at Wisdom Gym Sunday night.
The first two buckets of the affair came from beyond the arc, as
Cheikh Faye and
Tahlik Chavez found the bottom of the net to jumpstart the offense for the Bucs after Tarleton State controlled the tip. A
Taje' Kelly flush capped the quick start for Charleston Southern as the Bucs would lead 11-2. Tarleton State would answer back with a 10-2 run to bring the Texans back into the mix.Â
Â
The rest of the opening stanza was played as an Aaliyah record, back-and-forth with the Bucs holding on to the slim advantage the whole way. Faye continued to shoot it well down the stretch, having two more treys to fall along with a short jumper and a layup to keep the Buc offense clicking.
Â
Faye's 13 first-half points led both sides, as the CSU four-man was the lone player in double-figures.
Claudell Harris Jr. had a strong showing as well in the first half, finishing with two layups and four boards. For the Texans, Shamir Bogues led the way in the scoring department with eight points. Freddy Hicks was right behind with seven of his own, and Shakur Daniel chased down five boards.
Â
Tarleton State opened the second half with a little noise, taking just their second lead of the game lead of the contest on a 9-3 run. The Texans would control most of the remainder of the stanza, not trailing again until the under-five mark.
Â
A Kelly freebie from the charity stripe with 4:54 to play gave the Bucs their first lead since 17:16 to play. The final five minutes were fun to watch, as both teams traded blows until the buzzer sounded.
Â
The Texans would take a three-point lead with 1:56 to play with a Shamir Bogues layup and Charleston Southern would call a timeout. Following the ensuing thirty-second break, the Bucs would score the final five points of the game to claim its first road victory of the early season.
Â
Sadarius Bowser earned a trip to the stripe and made the first one, but the second one would not fall.
Sean Price came up big with an offensive board to earn CSU a bonus possession, a possession the Bucs would not waste. Charleston Southern would take the shot clock down to the final ticks and
Deontaye Buskey made the play of the night finding Bowser through a trap on the baseline. Bowser would convert the layup and be fouled on the play to earn a chance at three.Â
Â
The free throw fell, and the Bucs took the one-point lead with just over a minute to play. CSU's defense answered the call as well, getting two stops in that final minute to clinch the victory with the help of a Price free throw.
