Fleming delivers last-second dagger, Bucs take down High Point

HIGH POINT, N.C. – In almost the exact same fashion as he did one season ago, Phlandrous Fleming Jr. delivered a game-winning dagger to lift Charleston Southern men's basketball over High Point Friday night, 69-68 in Big South action.

Fleming scored a game-high 29 points to pace the Buccaneers (2-16, 1-13 Big South), none bigger than his game-winning three-point basket with under :03 to play.

Both teams traded runs throughout the night with High Point (8-11, 6-10 Big South) holding the largest lead early on before the Bucs responded with their own 14-0 run.

John-Michael Wright led the Panthers with 18 points while Bryant Randleman added 12 and Ahmil Flowers had 11, but Fleming's 29 along with 14 from Ja'Quavian Florence, 10 from Emorie Knox and 10 from Sean Price proved to be enough for the one-point win.

Fleming also had a season-high 12 rebounds on the night securing his fourth double-double and second in as many nights.

First Half
  • Phlandrous Fleming Jr. sparked a 14-0 Charleston Southern run after falling behind as each team traded runs through the first 20 minutes
  • High Point would answer with a 12-2 spurt of their own to make it 31-23 after the Bucs had tied it at 21-each
  • Sean Price and Ja'Quavian Florence then led the charge in the Bucs' final run of the stanza as CSU capped the half on an 8-0 spurt over the final 2:45 and held a 37-36 lead at the break
  • CSU's defense held the clamps on John-Michael Wright for a second-straight night to start holding the Big South's No. 2 scorer to just eight points in the first half across both games
  • After early foul trouble themselves, the Bucs got to the free throw line for 11 first-half attempts hitting eight with Florence and Fleming hitting a trio each
Second Half
  • John-Michael Wright hit the first three shots from downtown as High Point pushed their lead back to eight, but CSU wouldn't go anywhere
  • Down 64-58, Phlandrous Fleming Jr. scored eight of the Bucs' final 11 points including a pair of three-point baskets over the final 2:12
  • Ja'Quavian Florence scored eight of his 14 points in the second half including a three-point basket with 5:12 to play bringing the Bucs back within two baskets
  • After a missed free throw on the other end with :24 left, Fleming took an inbounds pass and delivered the dagger with :03 to play hitting a last-second shot for a second-straight season against the Panthers
