CHARLESTON, S.C. - Charleston Southern head football coach
Autry Denson announced that defensive line coach Jason Brooks has accepted a position within the Baltimore Ravens coaching staff on Monday morning.
Denson also announced the promotion of
Jacob Reithemeyer as the new defensive line coach for the Buccaneers' program. Reithemeyer has served as the Bucs' defensive line graduate assistant over the past year working directly with Brooks and defensive coordinator
Zane Vance with on-field instruction of the defensive line.
"This is definitely a bittersweet moment because we are all sad to see Jason Brooks leave, but we are equally as excited for him and his family regarding the opportunity that God has blessed them with to join the Baltimore Ravens of the National Football League," Denson said. "It has been an absolute honor and privilege to serve Jason and his family over these past two years. Although he and his family will no longer be here at CSU, they will forever be a part of our Buccaneer Football Ministry. I am praying that they have a smooth transition and that Jason will continue to use the platform of athletics to win lives for Christ as well as a few Super Bowls. God luck in Baltimore, Coach Brooks and family, we love y'all. Go Bucs!"
Brooks will be joining the Ravens' coaching staff as an assistant defensive line coach as he heads to Baltimore for the second time in his coaching career. He previously spent time with the organization as an offensive assistant and offensive quality control coach from May 2009 to February 2013.
He worked with the wide receivers and the running backs coaches during his time with the Ravens and was a member of the 2012 Super Bowl championship team when the Ravens beat the San Francisco 49ers.
Brooks' lone season with the Buccaneers saw Charleston Southern develop one of the elite defensive line units in FCS. Affectionately known as the 'BlockBoyz',
Anton Williams,
Shaundre Mims, and
Nick Salley all earned Big South First Team All-Conference status, while Mims and Salley were both named to multiple 2019 All-American postseason and 2020 preseason.
All four starting defensive linemen finished in the top five in the Big South in sacks in conference play, while Mims paced the Big South with 10.0 quarterback takedowns. Salley (17.5) led the conference in tackles for loss, while Williams (17.0) finished second overall in the category with Mims (12.0) and
Eishuan Funnye (11.0) also finishing in double-digits.
The Bucs open up spring preseason camp on February 12 as they start preparations for the 2021 spring Big South Conference season. CSU opens the year on the road on March 13 at Kennesaw State, before returning to Buccaneer Field for the home opener on March 20 against Robert Morris.
