CHARLESTON, S.C. – Charleston Southern softball split its first two midweek games of the season Wednesday, winning the first game over Coastal Carolina, 8-7, before dropping a 7-6 contest to the Chanticleers at the CSU Softball Field.
All nine Bucs in the lineup recorded at least one hit in the first game, with
Madison Koger and
Erika Cooper each hitting solo home runs in the game. Koger,
Brooklynn Brewington and
Sarah Brown each had two-hit games in the opener, with Koger,
Katelyn Norris and
Ashlyn Cribb also having two-RBI games.
Ashley Meckley had a doubleheader-high three hits in the second game and finished a triple short of the cycle. Brwintgont had two hits, while Meckley and
Sarah Brown had multi-RBI games. Four different pitchers saw time in the circle for the Bucs in the doubleheader, with
Alyssa Heinrich earning the win in the first game.
CSU got out to a 6-1 lead in the first game, with Koger providing the first two runs on a leadoff homer to center field in the first and a bases-loaded walk in the second. Norris hit a two-run single in the second and Cribb hit a two-run double down in the third to give the Bucs a five-run advantage midway through the game.
Coastal rallied to tie the game in the fifth inning, but Cooper broke the deadlock with a solo homer, the first of her career, in the bottom half of the inning. Heinrich kept the Chanticleers off the board in the last two innings to preserve the win.
The Bucs grabbed an early lead in the second game on a two-run homer by Meckley, her fourth of the season. CCU responded with two-run innings in the second, fourth and fifth to take a 6-2 lead, but the Bucs rallied back. Brown hit a three-run homer, her first of the season, in the fifth to bring the Bucs within a run. Coastal hit a solo homer in the seventh to extend its lead, but the Bucs matched that run on an error in the bottom half of the inning. CSU had the tying runner on base and the potential winning run at the plate, but the Chanticleers got a strikeout to end it.
How They Scored – Game 1
- Coastal opened the scoring on an RBI groundout in the first.
- The Bucs responded with Koger's first homer of the year in the bottom of the first.
- CSU took the lead on a bases-loaded walk in the second. The Bucs extended their lead in the inning with a two-run single off the bat of Norris.
- Cribb hit a two-run double in the third to extend the CSU lead to 6-1.
- Coastal hit back-to-back homers in the fourth, the first being a two-run blast and the second a solo shot, to make it 6-4.
- Brewington hit an RBI single in the bottom half of the inning to push the Buc lead back to three, 7-4.
- Kayla Rosado had the big hit for the visitors, a three-run homer in the fifth to tie the game at 7-all.
- Cooper broke the tie with a solo homer in the bottom of the fifth that proved to be the game-winner.
How They Scored – Game 2
- CSU got off to a quick start with a Meckley two-run homer in the first.
- Coastal scored its first run of the second on a fielding error, then tied it on an RBI groundout later in the inning.
- The Chanticleers took the lead in the fourth on a two-run double down the line by Mary Sobataka.
- Courtney Dean extended the CCU lead in the fifth with a two-run homer.
- Brown hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the fifth for CSU to cut the deficit to 6-5.
- Dean hit her second homer of the game and third of the day in the seventh, a solo shot over the scoreboard in left field.
- Brewington scored in the bottom of the seventh for the Bucs after Makiya Thomas dropped a pop fly that would have ended the game.
Notes and News
- Brewington had four hits in the doubleheader and increased her batting average to .410.
- Meckley finished a triple short of the cycle in the second game and upped her batting average by more than 40 points to .333.
- All nine Bucs in the starting lineup recorded at least one hit in the first game.
- Annah Junge received a no-decision for the seventh straight time to begin the season. Junge has a team-leading 4.70 ERA.
- The two teams combined for nine homers in the doubleheader – Coastal Carolina had five and Charleston Southern had four. Junge started the first game and allowed four earned runs in 4.0 innings.
- Heinrich earned her team-leading second win of the season in the first game.
- Meckley, Brewington, Brown and SeaEnna Satcher each had hits in both games of the doubleheader.
- Baylee Eaton started the second game for CSU and allowed six earned runs in 6.0 innings.
- Holly Clark threw a scoreless inning in relief of Eaton in the second game.
- The midweek contests were the first non-weekend games for Charleston Southern since the 2019 Big South Championships.

Charleston Southern hit the road for the first time this season when they head to Presbyterian for a three-game series. The Bucs and Blue Hose will play a doubleheader Saturday beginning at 2 p.m. with the series finale set for 1 p.m. Sunday afternoon.
