Bucs blank Blue Hose in Sunday series finale

CLINTON, S.C. – Charleston Southern scored in all five innings Sunday afternoon and pitchers Annah Junge and Baylee Eaton combined on a one-hit shutout as the Bucs won a run-rule contest, 8-0, over Presbyterian at the PC Softball Complex.

Junge got the start in the circle and struck out three in 2.0 innings of work while allowing just one hit. Following a rain delay of two hours and 49 minutes, Eaton took over in the circle and threw 3.0 hitless innings for her first win of the season, striking out three.

Katelyn Norris reached base four times for the Bucs, with three singles and a walk in four plate appearances. Erika Cooper went 2-for-2 with a walk for her second straight multi-hit game, while Ashlyn Cribb had a game-high two RBI's. Eight different Bucs had at least one hit in the game.

CSU opened the scoring in the first on an RBI groundout off the bat of Brooklynn Brewington. The Bucs put up a three spot in the second, with Cribb hitting a two-run single to account for most of the damage in the inning. The Bucs loaded the bases in the third, but inclement weather in the area caused a lengthy rain delay.

Following the delay, Cooper drew a walk with the bases juiced to bring home a run. CSU added a run in the fourth on a SeaEnna Satcher sacrifice fly, then plated two more in the fifth on a Rhiana Hubbard pinch-hit RBI triple and an Ashley Meckley RBI single.

PC had its best chance to score in the third when it loaded the bases, but Eaton got Jillian Hewes to ground out to second. Eaton then threw 1-2-3 innings in the fourth and fifth to seal the win.

How They Scored
  • Brooklynn Brewington gave the Bucs an early lead in the first when she drove in Katelyn Norris with an RBI groundout.
  • Ashlyn Cribb hit a two-run single up the middle in the second inning, scoring Dominique Mannerino and Erika Cooper to make it 3-0 in favor of the Bucs.
  • Norris extended the lead in the second with an RBI single, which scored Cribb.
  • After the rain delay, Cooper drew a bases-loaded walk in the third, which scored Brewington.
  • SeaEnna Satcher hit a sacrifice fly to center in the fourth, scoring Norris.
  • Pinch hitting in the top of the fifth, Rhiana Hubbard hit an RBI triple to score Cooper from first base.
  • Meckley hit an RBI single, plating Hubbard for the final run of the game.

News and Notes
  • Brewington tied her career-best eight-game hit streak with a single in the third inning.
  • Norris recorded her second multi-hit game of the season and second three-hit game of her career with singles in each of her first three trips to the plate.
  • Cooper now has back-to-back multi-hit games after entering the weekend without one in her career.
  • Hubbard's triple in the fifth inning was the first of her career and the second three-bagger for the Bucs in as many games, after entering the weekend with just one as a team.
  • Junge tied her season-high of three strikeouts, a mark she has now reached on four different occasions this season.
  • The duo of Junge and Eaton limited Presbyterian hitters to a .056 batting average in the game. PC was 1-for-18 in the contest.
  • The eight runs scored by CSU tied a season high, which was also accomplished in the first game of a doubleheader against Coastal Carolina on March 24.
  • This was also Charleston Southern's first run-rule win of the season.
