Bucs split pair of pitchers’ duels with Winthrop

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Baylee Eaton threw her first complete game of the season Saturday afternoon, as Charleston Southern split a doubleheader with Winthrop at the CSU Softball Field.

The Bucs took the first game, 2-1, while the visiting Eagles won the series finale, 4-1.

Eaton allowed three hits and one run in the first game, striking out a pair for her third win of the season. Erika Cooper, Sarah Brown and Meghan Gagliano each had two hits for the Bucs in the first game, while Brooklynn Brewington and SeaEnna Satcher had two-hit games in the second game.

Charleston Southern opened the scoring in the first game on a Madison Koger sacrifice fly in the fourth inning. The Bucs extended their lead to 2-0 in the fifth on a Sarah Brown RBI single. Winthrop scored a run in the sixth on a sacrifice fly, but Eaton kept the Eagles' hitters off balance, mixing 12 flyouts and seven groundouts with her two strikeouts in a winning effort.

CSU wasted no time scoring in the second game, as the Bucs took an early lead on an Erika Cooper walk with the bases loaded in the first inning. Winthrop grabbed the lead with a Taylor Charlton two-run homer in the second and added to it with a Kaitlyn Tucker two-run triple in the sixth. The Bucs left nine on base and had the tying run at the plate in the seventh but the Eagles got a strikeout to end the game and earn a split in the doubleheader.
