CHARLESTON, S.C. – Charleston Southern volleyball heads downtown for a single match with Lowcountry rival South Carolina State from the campus of The Citadel Thursday afternoon.
The Bucs are coming off a 1-2 weekend sweeping Bethune-Cookman and dropping two hard-fought 3-1 decisions to NIU and The Citadel.
Paige Reagor was named to the All-Tournament Team after hitting .471 with 38 kills across the three matches.
Charleston Southern and South Carolina State rekindle an old Lowcountry showdown the Bucs own by a 58-2 margin all-time. CSU has won the last 29 matches in the series and are a perfect 5-0 in neutral-site bouts. In their 22 matches since the turn of the century, the Bulldogs have only taken eight sets from the Bucs with just one meeting going a full five sets.
The Bucs and Bulldogs met every season between 2011 and 2019 before the Big South went to a conference-only slate in 2020 amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. Since their first meeting in 1979, the Bucs and Bulldogs have only gone six seasons without matching up. The last meeting came in Orangeburg during the 2019 season with the Bucs taking all three sets 25-15, 25-6 and 25-17.

South Carolina State enters the match at 0-5 on the season having lost all 15 sets. Thursday's match is their second-to-last nonconference battle before the MEAC season gets underway Friday, Sept. 24 from Dukes Gymnasium in Orangeburg.
Maria Julia Vedovatto leads the Bulldogs with 33 kills on the season but the team as a whole is hitting -.048 through five matches. Vedovatto also paces the team with five service aces and Kendal Rivera leads the way with 28 digs.
In their last match, the Bulldogs fell to Gardner-Webb 3-0 (25-9, 25-19, 25-9) with Vedovatto leading all players with 10 kills.
