CHARLESTON, S.C. –
Peyton Thompson and
Emma Minnick recorded double-doubles Saturday afternoon, helping Charleston Southern come from behind to down Hampton in five sets (25-20, 17-25, 27-29, 25-22, 15-9) inside Buccaneer Fieldhouse.
Thompson had a career-high 26 kills along with 16 digs, while Minnick had 47 assists and a career-best 24 digs for the Bucs.
Paige Reagor (12),
Gabrielle Naniseni (10) and
Ella Lochbiler (10) each reached double-figures in kills for the match, with Lochbiler's 10 representing a career high for the freshman.
Ashleigh Holweger added 24 digs for the Bucs' backline, while CSU had seven aces as a team.
CSU got off to a strong start in the first set. Led by four kills by Lochbiler, CSU trailed for just five of the 45 points played in the set on their way to a 25-20 win to start the match. Hampton came out firing in the second set, with three different Pirates recording three kills in the set on their way to a 25-17 set win.
The Bucs and Pirates played a back-and-forth third set, with neither team leading by more than three at any point in the match. Each team had multiple set points, with the Pirates eking out a 29-27 win in the set. Hampton then got out to a quick start in the fourth set and had a three-point lead late in the set, 22-19. The Bucs rallied with six straight points, including a pair of Lochbiler service aces, to force a deciding set.
Charleston Southern took five of the first seven points of the fifth set and never looked back. Reagor had four kills in the set and combined with Lochbiler for a block on the final point of the match to seal the win for the Bucs.
