Charleston Southern battles ECU to close finish

GREENVILLE, N.C. -- Charleston Southern gave East Carolina all it could handle, going toe-to-toe with the FBS Pirates for 60 minutes before dropping a 31-28 decision Saturday night at Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium.

CHAMBERS OR HOUDINI?
Quarterback Jack Chambers escaped ECU pressure and used his arm and legs all night to give his team a chance. He finished the night 38-of-61 for 405 yards and two touchdowns through the air, while adding 22 carries for 54 yards and another score.

QB SETS RECORDS
Chambers broke the single-game school records with his 38 completions and 61 attempts through the air, bettering previous marks of 34 and 55, respectively.

FOUR FOR 400
Chambers' 405 yards not only establish a career high but are the fourth-best effort by a signal caller in program history. It's the most since Collin Drafts' 406 against Gardner-Webb in 2006. Drafts set the standard with 419 against Allen in 2004.

WALL HAULS IN ANOTHER RECORD
Wide receiver Geoffrey Wall was the primary beneficiary of Chambers' efforts through the air, securing a single-game school record 14 catches for 92 yards, a career best. The 14 receptions surpass four other individuals who had 13 grabs, most recently Dee Brown at Wofford. Wall was on the receiving end of the final score of the night, a two-yard catch with 1:50 to go.

ANOTHER QUICK START
After taking a 21-0 first quarter lead in the season opener at The Citadel in the opener, the Bucs nearly matched it against East Carolina. They put up a 14-0 advantage through the opening 15 minutes, as JD Moore darted in from six yards away at 10:29 and Kale Anderson added his first career touchdown, a 38-yard catch, at 6:18 to cap an eight-play, 98-yard drive.

MCINTIRE ANCHORS DEFENSE
Justin McIntire wrapped up 13 tackles, 12 of which were shared stops, to not only set a season best but also establish a new single-game high for any Bucs individual in 2021. Among his tackles were one-and-a-half for loss plus an interception on ECU's final play of the third quarter, returning it for 18 yards.

GOING FOR IT ON FOURTH
The Buccaneers entered the game 0-for-3 this fall on fourth-down conversions but they quickly changed it into their favor, creating first downs on both of its final-down attempts against the Pirates. Both situations were during the first quarter as CSU not only held the shutout on the board but also had advantages of 10:23-to-4:37 in time of possession, 13-to-1 in first downs and 227-to-19 in total offensive yards.

RECORDS
Charleston Southern: 1-2
East Carolina: 2-2
