SMITHFIELD, R.I. – Charleston Southern football will head to Smithfield, Rhode Island to see a Bryant team that enters its first year as a competing member of the Big South Conference in football. The action is set for a 4:00 p.m. kick, marking the second-straight contest to start at 4 p.m. for CSU.
The Buccaneers again had their comeback bid stifled on the final drive of its last affair, as Campbell was able to stop Charleston Southern on fourth-and-short with under a minute remaining to hang on to the 34-28 win.
With
Isaiah Bess on the sideline, it was Tony Bartolo that was called on to do the honors under center and run the two-minute offense. The Buccaneers were able to get to midfield on the final drive, but a go route to
Kale Anderson fell incomplete on fourth down to spell the end of the final drive.
On the defensive side of the ball, Charleston Southern recorded nine TFLs with
Garrett Sayegh leading the way with two-and-a-half of his own to go along with a sack. Sayegh had a strong showing in the box, recording 16 total tackles that includes a sack and 2.5 tackles for loss. Charleston Southern collected four sacks for a total of 30 yards while surrendering just one on the other side of the ball.
Chavon Fields,
Anton Williams and
Shary Jefferson each stood in elite company, as the trio were the only three in the contest to record a sack and a tackle for loss.
Saturday's contest will be the fourth and final contest against first-time opponents as Bryant is in its first year in the Big South as a member school for football only. The Bulldogs' lone Big South contest came two weeks ago, as Bryant fell short on the road at North Carolina A&T.
Bryant is coming off a home win over Southern Connecticut State where they impressed with 56 points. The Bulldogs recorded 21 points in the second quarter and fourth quarter, adding a touchdown each in the first and third quarters.
