CHARLESTON, S.C. – Charleston Southern plays its final game of the regular season Wednesday night at Winthrop needing a win and help to earn a spot in the Big South Tournament. Kickoff at Eagle Field is at 6 p.m.
The Bucs enter the game in sixth place with 11 points, two behind Gardner-Webb and High Point for the fourth postseason spot. CSU can get the No. 4 seed with a win over Winthrop and losses by the Runnin' Bulldogs (home vs. USC Upstate) and Panthers (at Radford).
Should the Bucs earn a playoff berth, they will take on either Campbell or Upstate in the semifinals on November 3 in Matthews, N.C.
CSU is 5-1-1 in its last seven meetings with Winthrop and holds a 9-7-5 lead in the all-time series. The Bucs won, 2-0, last year in Charleston with
Jenea Knight scoring the second goal and
Erin Rush adding an assist.
The Bucs are coming off a 1-1 tie against Longwood on Saturday. CSU took the lead on a goal by
Fiama Hidalgo with only 2:04 left, but the Lancers answered 30 seconds later to deny the Bucs an important two points in the Big South standings.
Knight leads CSU with six goals and 16 points.
Elin Persson has four goals followed by Rush, Hidalgo,
Dakota Fiedler and
Bri Robinson with three each. Rush has a team-high five assists, one more than Knight and Robinson.Â
Sara Curtis has played all 1440 minutes and has a 1.81 goals against average and five shutouts.
Annabel Thomas leads the Eagles with seven goals and 16 points. Izzy Giarizzi leads the Big South in saves per game (5.57) and is second in save percentage (.821) while owning a 1.23 goals against average.
