FARMVILLE, Va. – The Charleston Southern Cross Country teams will race for a conference title on Saturday in the 2022 Big South Championships, hosted by Longwood..
The Men will be looking to take their third straight conference title after winning the 2020-21 and 2021 Big South Championships. Director of Track & Field and Cross Country Jim Stinzi stands at the helm for the Bucs. He is the reigning Big South Coach of the Year after winning the award for the third time in 2021. Stinzi has led the Bucs to back-to-back conference titles, one of just eight coaches to ever win more than one Big South Championship.Â
The Men are led by Micah Gilpatric, who won the Adidas XC Challenge in Raleigh, NC, and was 59th in a field of over 200 at the Weis-Crockett Invitational, the 2022 pre-national meet. Joining Gilpatric are fellow returning 1st team All-Big South runners, Alan Deogracias and Gavin Kuhlenbeck. Deogracias is one of just 50 Big South athletes to receive three All-Conference honors in his career while Kuhlenbeck was the 2020-21 Rookie of the Year.
The Women are coming off a third-place finish in the Big South in 2021, tied for the program's best finish. Anne Akagi returns after finishing second-team all-conference a year ago. Sophomore Keerstin Augustin and Akagi went 1-2 in the season-opening Buccaneer Open. Augustin and Sarah McCartney both finished in the top 10 at the Vertcross Invitational.
The Women's 5K is set to start at 10:30am with the Men's 8K following at 11:30am.
