CHARLESTON, S.C. – Charleston Southern got just three hits but none bigger than a two-out home run off the bat of
SeaEnna Satcher in the sixth inning, driving in the only runs, as the Buccaneers completed a weekend sweep over Mercer with Sunday's 2-0 triumph at CSU Softball Complex.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Buccaneers entered the sixth with just one hit off Bears hurler Hannah Pitts but
Ashley Meckley opened the frame with an infield single deep in the hole to her counterpart at shortstop. Back-to-back outs left her at first before she moved into scoring position with a stolen base. Satcher then launched her team-leading fourth home run of the season, and second of the weekend, over the right-center fence, giving Charleston Southern (8-10) the 2-0 cushion.
COMMAND IN THE CIRCLE
CSU was able to keep the Mercer (3-15) bats quiet for most of the day behind a solid complete-game pitching effort by
Annah Junge, the hitting heroine in Saturday's second game. She scattered only four hits in dueling for her fourth complete game, striking out eight Bears, a season high, and walking just three. She faced just six batters over the minimum as she had complete control in the circle with a defense that did not have an error playing behind her.
In the final frame, Junge allowed a Kylie Helm lead-off single but settled in, as Diamond Williams popped up foul to
Lexi Markle, Saturday's game-one heroine, at third base and then induced Morgan Hall into a fielder's choice, as Elisa Rosado was forced out at second base. Alyssa Woods then committed the final out with a grounder to Markle, who threw it across the diamond to
Erika Cooper for the celebration.
Junge mastered her pitches with sending the Bears down in order in the top of the second and sixth innings. In the top of the sixth, she struck out the side as Tori Hedgecock was caught looking and Adele Braun and Grace Prom went down with swings.
