ROCK HILL, S.C. – Charleston Southern belted two more home runs Sunday afternoon but the homestanding Winthrop Eagles rallied late to earn a 6-4 decision and claim the series in Big South softball action at Terry Field.
Buccaneers starter
Annah Junge was strong early, striking out four of the first-six batters she faced, including all three in the bottom of the second inning. After she induced a pair of pop ups to begin the third frame, Macy McCall gave Winthrop (13-26, 7-8 Big South) the initial lead with a home run over the right-field fence.
It came as CSU had its first base runner in the top of the third, as
Weslin Jones drew a two-out walk. She stole second and advanced to third on a passed ball; however, she was left 60 feet away following a foul fly out to end the inning.
Charleston Southern (17-21, 6-9 Big South) recovered from the early deficit, as
Ashley Meckley led off the fourth with a solo shot over the left-center fence to pull the Bucs even at 1-1. The offense continued to add base runners, as three singles by
Lilly Bishop,
Raleigh Lewis and
Madison Koger loaded the bags with one out, but unfortunately, none of the three were able to cross home plate.
In the fifth, the Eagles reclaimed the lead after Lauren King walked to lead off. Peyton Rivas entered as a pinch runner and moved to second on a Courtney Cygan fielder's choice. Paige Rivas singled back to Junge, advancing each runner 60 feet and loading the bases. Kaitlyn Tucker followed with a double off the left field wall, plating Peyton Rivas and Cygan, putting the home side ahead 3-1.
The Buccaneers, however, did not quit. In their next at-bat, the offense continued to find holes as Bishop singled through the left side. Lewis joined her on the base paths following a walk and both players exited for pinch runners,
Erika Cooper and
Ashlyn Cribb, respectively. Koger then launched a straight-away center field three-run home run, as Charleston Southern went back in front, 4-3. Koger joins Lewis and
SeaEnna Satcher for the team lead with six home runs, this spring.
In the bottom half of the sixth, Junge retired Ashton Vanhouse before a Bailey Warren double caused a pitching change as the Bucs turned to
Blake Holtorf in the circle the rest of the way. King reached on an error. Cygan followed with a single but a throwing error by CSU allowed each runner to move ahead one base, including Warren coming home for the game-tying score.
McCall then singled as King scored the go-ahead run and Cygan moved to second base. Another single by Paige Rivas loaded the bases before a Tucker sacrifice fly plated Cygan for the insurance run.
Meckley reached on a base on balls in the Charleston Southern seventh but the Buccaneers were unable to create any other offense.
Bishop and Koger both had multi-hit days, while Meckley and Lewis added to the attack with a hit apiece. Junge tossed seven strikeouts, walking one and scattering seven hits over her 5.1 innings, while Holtorf was saddled with the loss in relief.
The Bucs will look to regroup when they play host to Furman in a doubleheader Tuesday at CSU Softball Complex. It marks the final non-conference games of the season on the home field with first pitch slated to begin at 4 p.m.
