SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Charleston Southern's Ben Carroll and Griffin Traver are the top Buccaneers in the field Monday after the completion of 36 holes of the Wofford Intercollegiate at The Country Club of Spartanburg. The duo have scored an identical 2-over par 146 to help guide the CSU men's golf team to a share of 13th place after two rounds.
EAGLE HIGHLIGHTS CARROLL'S DAY
A pair of 73s put Carroll in position to take the squad's top score, as he carded the lone Charleston Southern eagle of the day on the par-5, 508-yard No. 15 during the first round. He supplemented that with back-to-back birdies to begin the tournament, on the par-4, 463-yard No. 10 and par-4, 274-yard No. 11, plus another on the par-5, 494-yard No. 5. He mixed in eight pars, including four-in-a-row from No. 1 through No. 4.
In the second round, he tallied 10 more pars with four birdies. His under-par holes were again on No. 10 plus the par-4, 333-yard No. 16 and then another set of consecutive holes, on the par-4, 396-yard No. 4 and No. 5. His longest stretch of pars was again four straight, this time starting a hole earlier, on No. 18 and concluding on No. 3.
TARVER CONTINUES TO FIND LOW SCORES
Fresh off a career-best 66 in the final round of the Golfweek/Any Given Tuesday Intercollegiate on his way to garnering Big South Co-Freshman of the Week honors, Tarver also recorded a pair of 73s Monday. He opened the first round with three birdies, on No. 15, the par-5, 516-yard No. 1 and No. 5 to go along with 11 pars, featuring four straight on the front nine from No. 6 through No. 9.
In his second trek around the course, he mixed in five birdies and eight pars. He was able to drop in under-par totals on No. 10, No. 15 and the par-5, 491-yard No. 17 on the back in addition to joining Carroll with them consecutively on No. 4 and No. 5. His best stretch of pars was four, on No. 18 through No. 3, with the others coming on No. 11, No. 14, No. 16 and No. 6.
MIDDLE OF A STACKED GROUP
Caleb Loudin was the next Bucs player in the clubhouse with a 5-over par 149, as one of 10 competitors to finish with the score Monday. He began his day with a 3-over par 75, featuring birdies on the par-3, 162-yard No. 14, No. 15 and No. 17 before making the turn to add another on No. 5. That first round also included eight pars, including the familiar No. 1 through No. 4 span.
In the second set of 18 holes, he again posted four birdies, finding the score on No. 17, No. 1, No. 5 and the par-4, 444-yard No. 7. Another run of four-straight pars, from No. 13 through No. 16, were a part of seven overall on the back nine and nine combined during the 18-hole outing.
TWO-STROKE DROP FOR SMITH AND WILLIS
The last two CSU players on the leaderboard, Alan Smith and Ethan Willis, each notched lower scores in their respective second rounds by two strokes from the ones they turned in on the opening 18 holes. Smith managed just two birdies in the first round, on No. 1 and No. 5, but combined them with 11 pars, including four-in-a-row from No. 10 through No. 13 and again from No. 6 through No. 9.
In his second round, one more birdie found its way onto the scorecard, with the effort taking place on No. 10, the par-4, 339-yard No. 12 and again on No. 5. He scored pars on five-consecutive holes, from No. 15 through No. 1, then four others on the front nine before calling it a day.
Willis' initial 18 holes included birdies on No. 15, No. 17 and No. 1 plus a run of three-straight pars during the No. 5 through No. 7 stretch. He also was Even on No. 10, No. 11, No. 13 and No. 9. His second round was very par-heavy, as after he opened with one on No. 10, he pieced together the longest span of any Bucs player on the day with six-in-a-row from No. 14 through No. 1, making the turn. He also sprinkled in three more before his round was over. He also managed birdies on No. 12 and No. 5 during the second trip around, on his way to the better score.
