SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Charleston Southern men's golf put a stamp on its 2021-22 regular season Tuesday, as it placed 15th out of 18 teams in the Wofford Intercollegiate at The Country Club of Spartanburg.
FRESHMAN TAKES CHECKERED FLAG
For the first time this season, a rookie led the way for the Bucs as
Griffin Tarver carded the team low with a 73-73-74—220 (+4) on his way to tying for 37th place. The April 1 Big South Co-Freshman of the Week capped his final day with three birdies, all in a row on the back nine. He came in under par on the par-5, 508-yard No. 15; the par-4, 333-yard No. 16 and the par-5, 491-yard No. 17. He also collected 11 pars throughout the round, including six straight from No. 18 through No. 5 after making the turn.
SECOND EAGLE PUTS CARROLL ON HIS HEELS
After carding the squad's lone eagle of the opening 36 holes Monday, during first-round play on No. 15,
Ben Carroll added a second to his weekly scorecard on the front nine Tuesday, finding the bottom of the cup two strokes early on the par-5, 494-yard No. 5. It was one of five total under-par scores throughout the last-18 holes, as he posted birdies on the par-4, 274-yard No. 11; the par-4, 364-yard No. 18; the par-5, 516-yard No. 1 and the par-4, 370-yard No. 9. He registered a 75 during the final round, one stroke behind Tarver's 74 and one stroke overall behind his freshman teammate on the individual leaderboard.
THREE BIRDIES, ALL ON THE BACK
Another CSU player with multiple birdies Tuesday was
Caleb Loudin, who notched three during the back nine-hole stretch. He earned the birdies on the par-3, 162-yard No. 14 and then consecutively on No. 16 and No. 17. He contributed nine pars throughout the day, including three-in-a-row from No. 11 through No. 13 with five on the front nine after making the turn.
WILLIS MOVES UP TO TEAM COUNTER
The other score to count for Charleston Southern Tuesday was another 77 off the clubs of
Ethan Willis. He included four birdies among his back nine, on No. 11, No. 15, No. 16 and No. 17 to go along with eight pars, including a three-hole span from No. 3 through No. 5. His final round was the only one of the three played this week in which he factored into the team score.
TEAM-HIGH DOZEN PARS FOR SMITH
Alan Smith battled all day to get scores below par and managed to do so just once, on the par-3, 231-yard No. 6. Meanwhile, he added a team-best 12 pars, including a five-hole stretch to begin the front nine and another run of four straight from No. 14 through No. 17.
UP NEXT
The Buccaneers return to the links next week for the Big South Championships in Ninety Six, South Carolina. The tournament begins Wednesday and runs through Saturday with 54 holes of stroke play before the top-four squads advance to match play to determine the league champion and automatic NCAA Regionals participant.
