CHARLESTON, S.C. – Elin Persson scored her first two collegiate goals, and
Jenea Knight also tallied a pair as Charleston Southern cruised to a 6-0 win over South Carolina State on Wednesday at the CSU Soccer Field.
Persson gave the Bucs (2-1) the only goal they would need in the 16th minute when she put a free kick from just outside the box over the head of Kierra Cox. Persson also scored in the 34th minute when she fired a shot off the crossbar and put the rebound in to make it 3-0.
The redshirt sophomore from Sweden played in 17 games over two seasons at Iowa State without a goal before scoring twice in her third match as a Buc.Â
Knight scored the second goal off an assist from
Chloe Bailey and made it 4-0 early in the second half with
Sam Carlson collecting the assist.
Bri Robinson (assisted by
Daniela Contreras) and
Kyia Tucker (from Carlson) rounded out the CSU offensive onslaught.
Knight now has a team-leading four goals during the early stages of the season while freshmen Tucker and Carlson had their first career goal and assists, respectively.
The Bucs had 32 shots while holding the Bulldogs without one until they fired three in the final 16 minutes. Knight had a team-high seven shots, including five on target, and Tucker had four shots. Cox made nine saves for SC State, and
Sara Curtis was forced to make only one for CSU.
The Bucs are back in action next Wednesday at Coastal Carolina and return home on September 4 for a 1 p.m. game against Jacksonville that will also serve as the team's Senior Day.
