The Charleston Southern Buccaneers were able to get back on Friday with a road victory against the Radford Highlanders The match included two come from behind victories in sets one and two, as the Bucs were able to take this match in four sets, winning the first two 25-23. Radford was able to take the third match by a 25-21 score, but after another back and forth battle in set four, the Bucs were able to claim victory 25-22.
In set one, Charleston Southern (9-8, 2-1) was able to jump out to a 6-1 lead, but Radford (5-10, 1-2) rallied late, taking a 21-19 lead. The Bucs were able to come back, led by
Indigo Young, who had two kills and
Peyton Thompson who had one kill to give CSU the set 25-23.
Skylar Yates had five kills and nine digs in set one. She also led the team in aces tonight with three.
Set two saw a very similar story with CSU jumping out to a 2-0 lead thanks to back-to-back kills by Yates. The Highlanders went on another run, though, to take a 14-7 lead. The Bucs would not go down, as they rallied with a 9-3 run to tie it at 17. During that run, Giada Pias-Marden had three straight kills. Tied at 23, Young gave the Bucs a 24-23 lead with a kill, and a block from Karlese gave the Bucs another 25-23 victory in set two.
Radford would not go quietly, as they took set three 25-21. It was a back and forth battle throughtout the match, but a 5-0 run by the Highlanders gave them an 18-13 lead and would prove to be too much for the Bucs to overcome.
After struggling out of the gate to start set four, CSU used a couple of runs to get the momentum going in their direction. Behind 20-19, the Bucs were able to take advantage of a few errors by the Highlanders as well as a kill by both Yates and Thompson to give CSU the 23-20 lead.
Jyriah Morgan had four kills in the set, including two down the stretch that would secure the victory for the Buccaneers.
Once again, Emilee Karlese led both teams in assist with 39 on the night.That puts her at 682 for her career, which is 14th all-time in school history.
Angelika Rusin had the most digs between the both teams with 26. She now has 89 on the season, which is the most in the Big South.
Charleston Southern is back in action on Saturday, as they will travel to High Point, NC to take on the Panthers. That match will start at 2 p.m. and will air on ESPN+. They will be back at the Buc Dome next Friday, October 7 as they play host to USC Upstate.
