CHARLESTON, S.C. – Charleston Southern held its annual senior day for women's soccer Sunday afternoon, and in a tight contest that was played evenly, visiting Jacksonville netted the only score in a 1-0 final from the CSU Soccer Field.
HONORING THE CLASS
Prior to the start of the game, the Buccaneers recognized eight players who will conclude their time with the program this fall. That group includes
Jenna Moran,
Lauren McDonald,
Elise Borys,
Kayla Reese,
Chloe Bailey,
Hannah Steele,
Bri Robinson and
Madison Fortner.
GAME-CHANGING SCORE
The Dolphins were the beneficiaries of the game's lone goal in the 71
st minute. Anaya Black dribbled across the top of the 18-yard box but her shot attempt was blocked by a Charleston Southern (2-2-1) defender. The ball landed right at the feet of her teammate, Bella Ruggiano, who redirected it past a diving
Sara Curtis and into the net.
In three home games thus far this fall for the Bucs, that goal is the first surrendered on their home turf. CSU had opened the campaign with a 9-0 win over Brewton-Parker and a 6-0 triumph against South Carolina State.
TAKING CHANCES
Charleston Southern finished with the upper-hand, outshooting the visitors 11-10, including 7-3 at the half.
Jenea Knight led the squad with three shots, while Reese and Robinson also had multiple attempts, but none of them found their way behind Jacksonville (3-0-1) netminders Gretchen Duttenhofer, who tallied three saves in the opening half, and Murphy Sheaff, who entered for the final 45 minutes.
The Bucs also led in corner kicks, 5-to-2, and created less fouls in a game that featured a yellow card issued to a player on both sides.
