Volleyball Falls to Gardner-Webb 3-0 on Saturday Afternoon

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Gardner-Webb defeated Charleston Southern by sweep on Saturday afternoon. The Runnin' Bulldogs moved to 2-3 in league play while the Buccaneers fell to 1-4.
 
Gardner-Webb got out to a quick start in the first set and built substantial lead over the hosts before a late comeback bid by CSU. At one point, the Bucs trailed 18-10 but were able to close the gap and tie it at 24 apiece after they were behind 24-20. GWU was still able to take the win at 26-24.
 
In the second, the Runnin' Bulldogs were able to gain another early lead, but CSU slowly started to chop into the deficit and even it 19 apiece. GWU put together a 3-0 rally and took the game 25-21. In the final set, the two teams went point-for-point with the Bucs having the narrow advantage. CSU held a 14-12 lead, but the visitors went on a 6-0 scoring run and were able to hold off a late Buccaneer rally to win the match 25-22.
 
Skylar Yates led the team in kills as she had a dozen with Giada Pais-Marden right behind her with 11. Jyriah Morgan had another solid outing with six kills after her career performance last night against Winthrop. Ilaria Durante dished 26 assists to go with a trio of kills.
 
Angelika Rusin led the team in digs as she collected 13. Durante added seven while Yates had six and Brenna Rowland with a career-high five out of the middle position. At the net, she finished with five total blocks and had Yates and Durante each pick up a pair during the matchup.
 
Charleston Southern returns to the court next weekend for a pair of home matches. They start the weekend with a Friday night showdown with Radford (1-3) at 6:00 p.m. and follow it with a Saturday afternoon contest against High Point (5-0) at 2:00 p.m.
