KNOXVILLE, Tenn. –
Casey Asman's homer in the seventh frame accounted for the lone run for the Buccaneers as Charleston Southern fell in the first of two contests with No. 3 Tennessee Tuesday night, 6-1.
No. 3 Tennessee (7-2) found runs in three different frames, opening the scoring in the home-half of the first after a Blake Burke single up the middle to score two Volunteers.
Â
The fourth frame was won by Tennessee as well, as it was again Burke answering the call once again. His second single up the middle was good enough to score Charlie Taylor.
Â
The Volunteers laid claim to three runs in the sixth, each of the three coming off home runs as Jared Dickey hit a solo shot before Burke answered with a two-run shot of his own.
Â
Charleston Southern battled throughout the night, scratching off four hits on the night but none bigger than the one coming in the seventh. Asman got a hold of a fastball with two strikes and took it out to right center field for his second bomb of the year and the sixth overall for the Charleston Southern offense.
Â
Neither team would find much success the rest of the way, as the final frame and a half would be played scoreless.
Â
Tennessee starter Zander Sechrist got the start but did not go the minimum five frames to qualify for the win, so it went to Seth Halvorsen (W, 1-0) as his line finished at the one earned run in eight outs, that run being off the lone hit on his line from Asman. Kirby Connell and Aaron Combs each tossed a scoreless frame as well for Tennessee to finish the contest.
Â
Sam Massey (L, 0-2) takes the loss for Charleston Southern, giving up two earned across two hits while recording five outs.
Johnny Alkire looked strong as well for the Bucs, going 2.1 innings while surrendering a single earned run across four hits and two walks.
Ryan Daugherty was charged with the other three earned across five outs, while
Dylan Matsuoka and
Zac Robinson each scoreless frames, Matsuoka getting four outs.
