RADFORD, VA -
Madelyne Lee was responsible for all five runs, as the Charleston Southern softball team defeated the Radford Highlanders 5-4 on Saturday in game one of this three-game series.
Lee went 3 for 4 with 3 RBI and 2 runs scored, hitting her first home run of the season, as the Bucs (12-17, 2-4 in conference) won their second-straight game.
Charleston Southern struck first with two runs in the first inning.
Ashley Meckley singled and moved to third on a wild pitch. She later scored on an RBI single by
Gracie Prince. Then, Maddie Lee knocked in her first run of the afternoon with an RBI single to make it 2-0.
Lacy Johnson tried to score from first base on the play, but was thrown out at home.
The Highlanders (9-19, 0-4 in conference) tied the game at two in the bottom of the fourth inning. They had three singles that to the runs scored.
The Bucs answered in the top of the fifth inning with two runs of their own. They scored all of their runs with two outs. With a runner at second base, Lee hit her first home run of the season to make it a 4-2 game.
Over the next two innings,
Annah Junge gave up a run in each inning to make it 4-4. A leadoff home run in back-to-back innings is what made it a tied ball game once again.
The Bucs regained the lead in the final inning, as Lee singled to center field with two outs and stole second base. Then,
Lexi Markle played hero and lined a double into the gap, scoring Lee and giving the Bucs the lead.
After a quiet bottom of the seventh inning, Junge picked up the win to improve to 11-5 on the season. She went the distance, tossing 7.0 innings, allowing 4 runs, 6 hits and striking out 3.
Prince went 2 for 3 at the plate with a walk, run scored and an RBI. Markle went 3 for 4 at the plate with a run scored, while
Ashlyn Cribb went 2 for 3.
On Deck
The series concludes with a doubleheader tomorrow beginning at noon, as the Bucs try to take the series and get to .500 in conference play. Both games can be seen on ESPN+.
