Bucs Celebrate Senior Day with Series Sweep over Eagles

CHARLESTON, S.C. - For the first time this season, the Charleston Southern softball team completed a sweep, as took care of the Winthrop Eagles on Saturday with two one-run victories. This was the final series of the regular season.

All five seniors were able to get into the game for the Bucs (22-25, 11-9 in conference), starting with a 2-1 victory in game one.

Game One
Down 1-0 in the bottom of the fifth inning, Gracie Prince led off the inning with a base hit and took third base on a double by Ashlyn Cribb. Then, Anna Grace Johnson made it a 2-1 game with a sac fly. Cribb made it to third base on the play and scored after a throwing error by the Eagles (26-24, 8-13 in conference).

The Eagles took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning against Annah Junge with an RBI single, but that was the only run that they scored in game one, as Junge allowed just one hit over the final 6.0 innings.

Junge improved to 19-7 with the win. In 7.0 innings, she allowed one run on three hits and struck out three.

Game Two
On her Senior Day, Raleigh Lewis got things started for the Bucs in the bottom of the first inning, crushing her third home run of the season over the left field fence to make it 2-0.

Riley Lauffer was cruising through the first 4.0 innings, until the Eagles got on the board in the top of the fifth inning with an RBI single. The Bucs responded in the bottom half of the inning, as Weslin Jones scored all the way from first base on a base hit by Ashley Meckley

Lauffer made it 6.0 innings, allowing one run on five hits and struck out three. She did not factor in the decision, as Maggie Carpenter relieved her in the top of the seventh inning, allowing two runs on two hits, a walk and a hit by pitch.

In the bottom of the seventh inning, Madelyne Lee gave the Bucs a walk off win with a bunt single. The ball went over the head of the first baseman and rolled all the way to the right field corner, allowing Lee to score on the play to give the Bucs the 4-3 win.

Carpenter picked up the win to improve to 1-1 on the season.

On Deck
With the series win, the Bucs have qualified for the Big South Tournament in Radford, VA as the No. 4 seed. The tournament starts next Thursday and goes through Saturday. The bracket will be announced on Sunday night.
