Women’s Basketball Announces New Signing Class

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Charleston Southern women's basketball team would like to recognize the newest additions to the 2023-24 roster. Head Coach Clarisse Garcia has announced seven members to join this year's team, including four transfers and three incoming freshmen.

"We are overjoyed to add 7 more exceptional women to our program," said Garcia. "Our staff did a great job identifying players who will be able to make their mark in this league with their competitiveness, passion, and drive to do something special here at CSU."

Here is a look at a few of the incoming Bucs:

Jordan Berry comes from a family of basketball players. Her sister, Taylor was played basketball for the University of Alabama, and her mother, Stacy, was an All-American at Tulane.

Berry comes to CSU after a four-year career at Ole Miss, where she was a four-year member of the SEC All-Academic Team and helped the Rebels get to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament.

Prior to Ole Miss, the New Orleans, Louisiana native attended Mt. Caramel High School, where she was a four-time All-Metro selection, an LHSAA All-State selection and a state champion.

Coach Garcia on Jordan Berry: "Jordan [Berry] brings a wealth of knowledge, experience and leadership to the court and we are elated that she will help pace us at the point guard position."

Caelan Ellis is another transfer that Garcia and her staff were able to land. She comes to CSU from the University of Buffalo. While at Buffalo, Ellis maintained a 3.3 GPA in her freshman year.

A standout basketball player in Powder Springs, Georgia, Ellis broke her school's record with 11 three point field goals in one game. She was also a four-time All-Region selection as well as Player of the Year her senior year.

Coach Garcia on Caelan Ellis: "Caelan [Ellis] is a great shooter and defender, so she will be able to make an immediate impact with her intensity."

Laura Ortega-Mora comes to Charleston Southern as a proven winner after rising through the JUCO rankings. At Highland Community College, Ortega-Mora was a NJCAA Region IV champion and a member of the All-Tournament Team.

A native of Spain, Ortega-Mora shined in high school, where she was a region champion in high school and made multiple All-Tournament Team.

She comes from a basketball family, as her parents own basketball club in Spain, where one of her brothers plays. She has another brother who plays professionally in Unicaja as well as two cousins who play professionally in Spain.

Coach Garcia on Laura Ortega-Mora: "Laura (Ortega-Mora) has a great feel for the game, an ability to score from multiple positions and her IQ will help us play up-tempo.

Garcia and her staff are also very high on their three incoming freshmen, who will be expected to come in and compete right away.

"Our three true freshmen are special to our program as they will continue to build on the foundation and culture we have set," said Garcia.

Keshunti Nichols comes to CSU from Pearl, Mississippi. While at Pearl, she led her squad to a MHSAA 6A State Championship in 2019 and was voted best defensive player on her team as well as most improved.

Coach Garcia on Keshunti Nichols: "Keke [Nichols] has one of the highest motors and knack for the ball that we have seen, so her ability to generate offense and protect the paint will be extremely beneficial."

Mya Dotson is the last signee that we will feature for this week. She is a native of Lewisville, Texas, where she averaged 18 points per game in her final year of high school. According to Coach Garcia, she is "someone who can score and defend at a high level."

"We are thrilled to add [Mya's] skill set and passion for winning," said Garcia.

There are two signees that are not mentioned above, and that is Maya Robinson as well as incoming freshman, Alaina Nettles. Both girls will be featured next week as the women's basketball team continues to feature their signees.
