Women's Basketball Welcomes Additions to Coaching Staff

CHARLESTON, S.C. - The Charleston Southern women's basketball team has added four new members to their coaching staff this week, as Head Coach Clarisse White and her team prepares for the 2023-24 season.

White has hired Marc Wilson to be her Associate Head Coach. Wilson comes to Charleston Southern by the way of Queens University, where he spent the 2022-23 season. He brings 23 years of coaching experience with stops at eight other programs.

Wilson brings postseason experience, as he has helped lead teams to the postseason at multiple stops. He spent a season at Utah State University, where he was pivotal in the development of All-Mountain West Honorable Mention Adryana Quezada. Before being a member of the Aggies' coaching staff, he was a part of the Cleveland State staff that had 21 wins in a season, which was just the third time in program history that the team had reached the 20-win mark.

Wilson will focus mainly on the defense, as he was defensive coordinator at Southeast Missouri State, Clemson and UAB, where his unit led the Conference USA in three-straight seasons. Wilson also has stops at Indiana University, Kent State, the University of Rhode Island and Minnesota, where recruited two WNBA draft picks in Lindsay Whalen and Janel McCarville.

Wilson played his collegiate career at the University of Minnesota and is a member of the school's top-10 all-time scoring, assists and steals list. He was a co-captain on the 1986 team and earned All-Big Ten honorable mentions twice.

Amir Gilliam begins his second season on White's staff, as he receives a promotion to assistant women's basketball coach. Gilliam was on CSU's staff last year, helping develop players such as Catherine Alben, who made the Big South All-Freshman team.

In his collegiate career, Gilliam was a two-year player at Northeastern State. There, he played in 44 career games and made 17 starts. Prior to his career at Northeastern State, he was a NJCAA National Champion in 2012-23, tallying 81 steals on the season.

Zaire Hicks joins the staff after being a two-year starter for Clarisse White for the past two seasons. She will be the Director of Operations for the women's basketball team. As a player in 2022-23, Hicks appeared in all 30 games, making 25 starts and led the team with 49 steals. She was also a member of the Big South All-Academic team.

The final newest member of the 2023-24 women's basketball coaching staff is Sammy Johnson Jr. who has been brought on as a Graduate Assistant. Prior to joining the White's staff, Johnson Jr. was the head coach for Fairley High School in Memphis, TN. There, he won District Coach of the Year in 2023 and led his team to the district championship and a spot in the 8AA Region Tournament.

Prior to that, he spent two years at the assistant girls basketball coach at A. Maceo Walker Middle School.  Johnson Jr. played his collegiate career at Ecclesia College, where he graduated in 2018 with a degree in Leadership; Psychology and Counseling.

In year three of the Clarisse White era, the Bucs will look to continue to move in the right direction with this year's staff.
