FARMVILLE, VA - The Charleston Southern men's basketball team saw their conference record drop to 0-2 on Saturday afternoon, as they fell to the Longwood Lancers by a 77-56 score.
Taje Kelly led Charleston Southern (4-11, 0-2 in conference) with 19 points and nine rebounds, as he came one rebound short of a double-double.
DJ Patrick was right behind him with 15 points. The Bucs had 15 offensive rebounds that led to 17 second-chance points.
The first half was a low-scoring affair, as Charleston Southern took a 6-5 lead at the first media timeout. Neither team broke double digits until the 12:38 mark of the first half when Longwood (13-4, 1-1 in conference) took an 11-8 lead. From there, the Lancers went on an 8-0 run, and the Bucs were held scoreless for nearly five minutes.
The Bucs were able to get the deficit to within six when Kelly and Patrick hit back-to-back jump shots with eight minutes to go in the opening half. From there, the Lancers were able to push their lead to 27-14 with 3:56 left, as once again, the Bucs were held scoreless for a five-minute period.
In the second half, the Lancers kept their foot on the pedal, as they pushed the lead to 19 pints with a free throw with just under nine minutes to go to make it 58-39. Their lead got to as much as 23 points with 27 seconds left, as they were able to control the momentum of the game throughout the second half.
The Bucs found most of their success in the paint, as 22 of their points were from the inside. They shot just 4/22 from beyond the arc, including 2/12 from the three point line in the second half. On the other side, the Lancers were 50% from beyond the arc (7/14) and shot 51.9% overall from the field.
