Shaylor, Buglass Record Career Bests in the 6K at ECU Pirate Invitational

GREENVILLE, N.C. – The Charleston Southern Women's Cross Country team season continued to roll on this Friday morning. The Buccaneers raced at the ECU Pirate Invitational in Greenville, North Carolina claiming ninth overall at the race with a few of their top runners not competing at the meet.

Charleston Southern finished the race with a team score of 217, seven behind of Georga Washington and 50 ahead of Norfolk State. The Buccaneers were able to knock of the pair of Big South schools at the race in Radford (12th) and Winthrop (18th) of the 20 squads in attendance. William & Mary won the event with a team score of 19.

Karl Thiessen, assistant coach for cross country and track & field, said "At this point in the season, we are still competing with heavy legs and higher volume weeks. We were without three of our top seven women, which really hurt us on the day."

Sarah McCartney led the team to the tape as she finished in 5th overall in the field with her time of 21:42.4 and had herself sandwiched between a group of four William & Mary runners.

Elizabeth Shaylor was the next to finish with her time of 22:29.6 for 25th overall with Freya Buglass at 29th overall with her time of 22:35.5. Each of these set personal best times for student-athletes. Charlize Antia and Taylar White rounded out the top five for the Buccaneers as they recorded times of 23:35.1 and 23:40.1 with Antia's marking a new career best in the distance.

"Sarah ran tough as our low stick today and I am really happy to with her effort and willingness to fight for the team," said Thiessen. "Elizabeth, Charli and Avery ran exceptional races and stepped up for the team today when we were having an off day! I am really proud of their willingness to run tough for the team."

Katrina Husby and Avery Bender were the final scorers for Charleston Southern in the field with their times of 24:04.3 and 24:20.5. Brianna Adams, Finleigh Simonds and Valerie Capalbo also competed in the race.

Charleston Southern has one more race left in the regular season and is expected to be one of the top ones in the nation this year. They will be flying out to College Station, Texas to race at Arturo Barrios Invitational to run on Friday, October 18 which will be hosted by Texas A&M.
