NASHVILLE – The Big South/Ohio Valley Football Association announced the winners of their weekly awards on Monday morning, selecting a pair of Buccaneers to honors this week.
Davion Williams was named the Co-Defensive Player of the Week while
Tyson Greenwade earned Freshman of the Week.
These become the fifth and sixth weekly awards that Charleston Southern football has earned this fall with the Buccaneers now claiming three of the defensive editions of the award. This come following a closer, nail-biting 17-14 loss to Gardner-Webb in the inaugural North/South Barbecue Bowl inside Buccaneer Field.
Davion Williams led not just the Buccaneers' secondary, but the whole defense's effort against Gardner-Webb. He finished with eight tackles, seven of which were solo stops, four TFLs, a sack, a forced fumble and a QB hurry. The biggest play of the day came in the third quarter when following a CSU turnover and on the second play on the GWU drive that followed, Williams got to the QB for a strip sack, giving the Bucs the ball back. This set CSU up inside the red zone and allowed them to cut their deficit to 10-7 as they got their first points of the day on the drive. His four TFLs are the most by a CSU player in a game since 2021.
Greenwade earned his second freshman of the week award with today's honor. He compiled 68 rushing yards off 15 carries and a touchdown while he added 31 receiving yards on three catches on Saturday. He had a 25-yard reception late in the fourth quarter which brought the ball down inside the red zone and set CSU up for a
Kaleb Jackson rushing touchdown to cut their deficit to 17-14. Earlier in the game, his rushing touchdown were the first CSU points of the day and brought them within three points as well at 10-7.
Charleston Southern returns to the field this weekend as they will host UT Martin in the Buccaneer home finale. The kickoff is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. with the game to be available live on ESPN+.
