CHARLESTON, S.C. - Less than 48 hours after playing the Clemson Tigers, Head Coach Saah Nimley and his basketball program got back on the road. This time, heading South to play the Ospreys of North Florida.
The two competing teams met each other last season and in that match up, it was RJ Johnson who saw a successful scoring night (25 points). In this year's meeting, it was fellow returning Buc, Taje' Kelly who put up similar numbers (26 points). Kelly led CSU in scoring on a very efficient 12/17 shooting performance. After failing to reach double-figures on opening night in Clemson, Kelly returned to the court Thursday evening and let Buc Nation know his ability to score and willingness to take shots is very much intact.
The first half of the East coast battle was competitive. Some efficient shooting by RJ Johnson added with Taje' Kelly's consistent scoring effort left the Bucs with only a seven point deficit heading into halftime.Â
Coming into Thursday evening, there was no overlooking how dangerous of a shooting team North Florida is. Despite an excellent defensive gameplan and contesting countless deep shooting attempts, the shots would continue to fall for the Ospreys, especially in the second half. UNF only missed a single three-point attempt in the second half, and when you shoot ten threes and only miss one of them, there are few teams in the country that can prevail.
A blazing hot second half would push the Ospreys ahead of Charleston Southern with the game finishing result being 66-90 in favor of UNF.
True freshman Keenan Wilkins, who scored in double figures (10) in his first ever collegiate ball game last Monday, played a whopping 36 minutes Thursday night. A balanced effort from the Hendersonville, North Carolina native was displayed in game two as Wilkins posted 6 points, 6 rebounds, and 4 assists (tied for team-high).
Outside of Kelly, Reis Jones was the only other Buc to record a two-digit number in the scoring column. In only 17 minutes of action, Jones scored 10 points of his own while also pulling in 6 boards.
The Bucs' next contest will be back home in their beloved Buc Dome Monday night against Morris College. The ball game will tip-off at 7 PM and will be CSU's first contest at home this season.
