NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. - In exciting fashion, the Charleston Southern softball team earned the series win over the Wofford Terriers on Saturday, as they swept the doubleheader on a pair of walkoffs to improve their record to 13-12 on the season.
Game One
Down 3-2 entering the bottom of the seventh inning,
Charlee Yourman reached on a fielding error by the Terriers (10-9). After Blakely Kingsmore came in to run for Yourman,
Lacy Johnson got her to second base with a single. Then,
Emma Villaescusa provided the magic with a walkoff two-run double to give the Bucs (12-12) the 4-3 win.
Both teams got on the board early, as the Bucs were down 2-0 entering the bottom of the first.
Weslin Jones walked followed by a
Carsten Sandvig single, and Yourman brought in both runners with a two-RBI double to make it 2-2. The Terriers regained the lead in the top of the fourth inning with a two-out double off of
Riley Lauffer who came in relief of
Blake Holtorf.
Holtorf started the ballgame and went 2.2 innings allowing two runs (one earned) on three hits and three walks. Lauffer followed that with one run allowed on four hits and two strikeouts.
Nealy Lamb picked up the win to pick up her team-leading fifth win of the season. She improves to 5-3 after retiring the Terriers in order in the top of the seventh.
Game Two
Tied 1-1 entering the bottom of the seventh inning, it was Sandvig who provided the heroics, as the Terriers booted a groundball to second base that scored
Madelyne Lee to give the Bucs (13-12) a 2-1 win.
Neither team scored until the bottom of the fifth inning, as
Cadence Walding got the bats going with a one-out triple and came around to score on an RBI single by Lee.
Annah Junge was cruising through 5.0 innings but ran into some trouble in the sixth inning. The Terriers tied the game with a two-out home run to left field.
Junge struck out two batters, allowed three hits and one run in 6.0 innings of work but earned a no decision. Lamb picked up her team-leading sixth win of the season with a 1-2-3 top of the seventh.
